Australia will host the next ICC T20 World Cup from 16 October – 13 November 2022 with 16 international teams featuring in the event.
The qualification pathway for the event is as follows:
- The winner and runner-up of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 plus the next six highest ranked teams (as of November 15, 2021) will go straight through to the Super 12 stage of Australia 2022
- The remaining four teams from the Super 12 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 will play in the 1st round of the T20 World Cup 2022
As there won’t be upsets when it comes to semi-finalists of the on-going T20 World , the top 8 ranked teams by 15th November 2021 will gain direct entry to the T20 World Cup 2022.
As of today ( 3rd Nov ) Sri Lanka remain in the 10th position in ICC T20 team rankings with 230 rating points while West Indies and Bangladesh are ranked 8th and 9th with 234 and 232 rating points respectively.
Sri Lanka can go straight to the T20 World Cup 2022 without playing round 1 matches if Sri Lanka can make it into the top eight of the ICC T20 rankings by the cut-off date of 15th November 2021.
Inconsistent West Indies are set to play their remaining two Super-12 matches against Sri Lanka and Australia while Shakib Al Hasan – less Bangladesh will play their last match with Australia. Both West Indies and Bangladesh are likely to lose rating-points against strong Australia.
The Sri Lanka v West Indies Super-12 clash is likely to be the key factor that decides which team will gain direct entry to the T20 World Cup 2022 being ranked 8th in the ICC T20 team rankings by the cut-off date of November 15th.

T20 Team Rankings as of 1st November 2021 ( * Results of South Africa v Bangladesh match is NOT included )
As of 06th November 2021 Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are ranked 8th and 9th respectively with 232 equal rating points. Unfortunately, Sri Lanka have missed the direct entry to the World Cup 2022 by decimal number of points.
A Stronger win against West Indies could have made a difference or Sri Lanka would definitely make direct entry to the World Cup 2022 if they managed to beat South Africa in the Super 12 match.
