Mathews ton helps Sri Lanka post 264 against India

Playing their last league match of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, 1996 champions Sri Lanka managed to post 264 runs against India by opting to bat first. Angelo Mathews scored his 3rd ODI ton after Lahiru Thirimanne got out for 53 to Kuldeep Yadav. It was a matured display of batting by the experienced Mathews as he weathered the relentless Indian onslaught and rebuilt Sri Lanka’s innings after early jolts. Mathews hit 10 fours and 2 sixes to finish with 113 in 128 balls.

  1. Absolutely great knock from Mathews .Though we lost , theres more positives we can take from this world cup , to add to the list .It has been a woeful 4 years since the last world cup , but now we’ve finally started showing some life and some fight .yes the bowling was toothless today , but thats mainly because of selection blunders on the bowling front .Overall this has been a good tournament for our boys and we should be proud of what we’ve done with so much chaos and corruption and a horrible string of losses heading into the world cup .Malinga ,A real fighter will be missed .I sure hope that he will stay on and contribute towards helping our younger fast bowlers develop their death over skills , maybe in a part time consultant role .

As for our team moving forward , Mathews and Thirimanne seem to be the guys who can hold this team together by being a stop in case a collapse occurs and our naturally free flowing batsmen at the top can play their natural game .Moving forward I think Mendis needs to be given a break from ODI cricket because he seems to be getting worse by the day in terms of dealing with pressure.Plus it even tranfers to his fielding because though he is generally an exceptional fielder , when the pressure mounts , he lets down absolutely sitters , just like thisara .The only spot that hasnt performed in this WC is his no 4 spot .And the other loss is that of a good lower order finisher at no.7 or 8 .I reckon its time to move on from perera and invest in Dasun Shanaka at no.7 and the coaches should work on his bowling a lot too to make him a perfect fit to that position .As for no.4 I reckon it should be either Oshada Fernando or Dananjaya De Silva .Both seem to be ideal fits for that spot and are cool heads under pressure as well .

However our bowling unit needs a complete overhaul with the likes of passengers like Jeevan and Siriwardena being dropped .Furthermore Lakamal should be kept and saved just for test matches because its a waste to ruin his talent playing ODIs .We need to go back to the Seam bowling unit of Pradeep ,Udana , Rajitha , Chameera and Kumara .Another key issue is the lack of a quality frontline spinner .It would be great to go back to Akila Dananjaya because he only underperformed in the SA ODIs .And also we need to relaize that the only issue was with his stock ball , the off break .He can still bowl the Wrist spin and the googly , its just that his off break comes off with a more straighter arm with his new action .For him , its mainly his confidence , and anyone whos been watching his closely within the past two years knows that he is a real confidence bowler .So give him that confidence and back his ability for a decent period again and Im sure he can get back to his usual effectiveness .Because I dont sèe any other genuine spin bowler anywhere close to be honest .Maybe we can give Ambuldeniya a go and also invest in Wanindu Hasaranga .

Overall it would be great if the selectors dont make any drastic changes and just the 3 or 4 changes to the squad thats needed .This would be a good squad going forward in my opinion .
