  • If we can’t play a specialist
If we can’t play a specialist spinner on a spin friendly wicket then what’s the point of having Sachi in the squad? If we had another decent spinner we could have won both our games against WI and ENG.

Same with Lakmal, we just wanted few other guys to be in the side so they can carry water. We could have at least selected Ajantha or some other instead of these bench warmers as we knew from day 1 they will not feature in the playing 11.

We knew from day 1 we will struggle with our death bowling if Lasith doesn’t play, but what did we do, we just tried to fill that with a bowler (Perera)who doesn’t even bowl under 8 runs an over in the middle overs to bowl at the death.

  • We have to understand certain
We have to understand certain things here. The new selection panel cannot name a completely new team or make 5 / 6 changes. This should have been done long time ago and not at this point where we are going to play a world title tournament.
They left out young jefry and Dickwella both are very new to international cricket and with very little international exposure. Especially bowlers must have played at least 10 games before coming and bowling at international level.

I would back Thirimana’s inclusion as we don’t have a player to play anchor role in the middle order except for Mathews. Look at the scored we made in tour of India and in Asia cup. Our middle order struggled to rotate strike and maintain a healthy run rate. They not only struggled but also lost too many wickets without knowing to handle the pressure. Game against Bangladesh is a fine example. We don’t need just the big hitters to wing games we must have a balanced squad.

I am not too sure why lakmal was selected, because he hasn’t proven anything in T20’s yet. To be honest I have no faith in the current bowling line up except for Malinga. Even Herath isn’t that effective in t20’s and he can easily go for runs if batsmen try to attack.

Now we have to play the tournament with this squad, so we have to find the best 11 to play and we must have a strategy. Dilshan is out of form and Chandi is little slow to provide a cracking start. But this is the openers and this is not the time to experiment with Milinda. All we can do is hope for the best from the players and expect some luck be on our side.
