  • @SlCricketROX
    You have hit

    @SlCricketROX

You have hit the nail right on the head.

    Here is an example.

Long before I got involved with Hilal to start up Islandcricket, I was on a site called Sporting Go, it has mainly Aussies but all other Cricket fans too, but SL Cricket or Cricketers get discussed. The moment it does I pop up and get involved. lol. Same way these Cheterfield fans popping up here to fight for him. lol.

I am sure all genuine Sri Lankan Cricket fans here will remember that memorable “Bopara – Fernando” incident during England Srilanka match,April 2007.

There’s a career journalist and a Tabloids (British newspapers Sun, Daily Express) columnist, Donna Gee. Donna wrote an an article for Sporting Go titled: “Sri Lanka are tops – but let’s make a no-bowl a no ball!”, day after England lost to Sri Lanka in the WC 2007.

All hell broke loose. lol. She was all but battered to death by Sri Lankans, and other Cricket fans. I think it’s one of the most commented articles she ever wrote. She said so later and admitted that she knew how passionate Sri Lankan fans were and expected that very reaction to her provoking article. She was quite pleased about the high response actually.

It goes without saying, I was one of those commented on that article back then. Several times.

Here are some of very few reactions from others:

Richard McCloud 6th of April – “Donna, embarassing to say the least. Sounds like you over heard a drunk conversation and decided to write on it. Get your facts straight, its malinga’s action thats conisdered slingy-javeline like but legal NOT Fernando. Your a disgrace!”

by aba on April 06, 2007
WTF IS wrong with you woman!

Lock 7th of April Donna, you say: “I think we’re the best losers on the planet!” If this is true, then you wouldn’t be writing such garbage!

People express different opinions about articles by all sorts of writers, anybody who thinks that only this site disagree with articles written by Mr Chesterfield, and we challenge because we are bigoted or whatever, really are the close minded people themselves.

Just for people who are outraged that I have something against Chesterfield, here is my response 3 years ago to Donna Gee’s article about Dilhara Fernando:

My post on 6ht of April 2007 – Donna, You write “the fact that his second attempt was right on target suggest otherwise”. Here’s a little secret Donna, there are 6 balls in an over and any one of those can bowl the batsman out. Fernando has been “righ on target” during this the World Cup. This time it just happned to be a crucial game for England. You say “Only the batsman can lose out from such action and that is not fair”. Again, you are showing your ignorance of the game. You may not have seen Cricket in South Wales, but I have seen many times batsmen pulling out before a ball. That unsettle the bowler too. That’s the game, players know that too. You seem to be the only one who doesn’t know about it. In fact Ravi (Bopara) himself said at the interview after “bowler was entitled to do so” You must not have too many Chadonnays in the press box just becasue it’s free Donna my love. Since you have a fixation with rule changing (I refer to your Rugby article in Nov 06), how about giving Sri-Lanka a few more balls to ball against South Africa. It’s not fair, they ran out of balls, they only needed on more wicket to win.

Now some people here may not be able to make much sense out of above comments, but ardent Cricket fans know what I am on about. lol.

For those of you who think that I am only against “Britishers”, here is a post from a fellow Sri Lankan on Donna’s article:

: A bowler is entitled to hold back bowling a ball if he is not quite ready to deliver as much as a batsman is entitled to no face a bowler,if he is not ready. Donna Gee is just sore about England’s loss that she is trying to change the rules of a man’s game. All I can say is she is “Nuts” and this “nobody” of a journalist should cover netball or some other sport which she knows nothing about !

    My response to that post:
    9th of April 2007
@ Perera, You write “She is trying to change the rules of a man’s game”. What an out of dated & sexist remark is that! Noticed “Toronto”. It’s understandable since Candadian male Cricket Team can’t really play Cricket yet, you can’t contemplate women playing Cricket. For your information,Cricket is not exactly a “man’s game” anymore. NZ, ENG, IND & SL amongst the countries that have women’s teams. It’s not just men that enjoy or know about Cricket. Now if you will excuse me, I’ll go back and tie myself to the kitchen sink.

And for Emile, who’s entirely political comments on a post above were deleted:

My stand on anybody trying to use Cricket to express/highlight country’s political state of affairs: As responded on the 7th of April 07 on Donna Gee article.

My post: Guys & Gals, I think we expressed our views loud and clear on this article. Leave the lady alone and let’s move on to something more worth while now. Seems to me that SL team has lots of loyal fans. Now we all focus on this cheap publicity stunt by Amnesty International at Srilankan Cricket Team’s expense. Politics (just as racism) has no place in sport. Lots of people save up money and holidays to be there to watch these matches. Don’t let Amnesty force politics down on fans of Cricket just to gain their free press coverage. Another time another place maybe. Cricket fans unite!!! Condemn Amnesty “Play by the Ruels” aimed to distract Cricket.

Note that I am not responsible for child rape, or human blockade in Sri Lanka or any other political and social decline as you suggested. My interest in Sri Lanka is it’s Cricket Team or anything Cricket related.

So, there you go. I love my team and fight tooth and nail anywhere if I felt that one of them is wronged.

Anyhow, If I didn’t challenged his sentence on Bedser record by Ajantha, plus of course Mendis’s timely 6 wicket haul, lol, this article would’ve died down after a couple of comments. I wonder if Mr Chesterfield would consider giving me some commission for generating so much interest.

  • Political rantings
Political rantings unconnected to Cricket, insulting a deeply religious player’s mother is not quality.

You should really take the time to look around the site, before jumping to conclusions that there is some kind of a witch hunt against Chesterfield’s articles.

There are other regular bloggers who contributes greatly to this site gets challenged for their views too, I didn’t notice anybody so strongly objecting to those.

So, who’s taking what personally? Very questionable indeed.

Tantrums? LOL. I thought it was the other way round.

Some Chesterfield followers seems to have especially come here to show their indignation that somebody dared to question what he’s written.

  • @Sanki8oH8
    Writer concludes

    @Sanki8oH8

Writer concludes in the last paragraph,

“Fifteen months later in Kanpur Mendis was found out. Dravid used his feet and had the bowler delivering the length he wanted, Sehwag helped himself and Sachin Tendulkar, used him like a wind-up toy train. The Mendis mystery was throttled into submission. His two wickets cost 162 from the 38 overs and he was dropped from the Mumbai Test.”

    How about this:

“48 hours later, Mr Cheterfield’s above paragraph was Mendismissed, disregarded and discarded by some Islandcricket members, as very same players Dravid, Tendulkar, Sehwag along with 3 others were throttled into submission in a practice match with the full Indian Team. On the bright side, unfortunately ill timed article provided many members several hours of entertainment”

  • Thanks for your input Emile,
Thanks for your input Emile, but here is a fact for you:

It is Ajantha Mendis’s name recorded in history against the record previously held by Bedser.

He also holds the record for getting the fastest 50 ODI wickets.

I pointed that out in response to a sentence on Chesterfield’s article, which was “SOME SAID MENDIS WOULD RE-CREATE HISTORY”

Some said, yeah and Mendis did. I was merely stating a fact, so what is your problem my friend?

Is it some sense of superiority you feel above ordinary Sri Lankans?

Yes Bedser died at the age of 91 in Surrey in mid April. May he rest in peace, but he had good innings.

Lots of things happened with our living Cricket legends between 24th of April and now for me to concentrate on, so forgive me if death of Bedser seems like it happened in another century to me.

I make no apologies for being passionate about Sri Lanka Cricket. In case you haven’t noticed, this is the “home of the Srilankan Cricket fan”.

If you feel that I make carped comments about somebody you worship, go on sue me, otherwise, just get over it.

  • Why on earth would I not like
Why on earth would I not like Mr Chesterfield’s writing.

I am sure he writes the way he writes because it’s thought provoking and somewhat controversial. No offence taken. But that doesn’t mean we have to hang on with agreement to his every word.

Anyway, these comparisons have been written about before. Many times. I remember reading an article by Mike Atherton (in the plane on my way to watch Ind vs SL Galle Test , 31st of July 2008), titled “Let’s enjoy mystery man, while we can”. All the usual suspects (except Paul Adams)Gleeson, Jack Iverson, Sonny etc were mentioned and compared on that too.

It doesn’t which player did what in the past, fact remains that it is currently Mendis who holds that record previously held by Bedser.

I,as a die hard Sri Lankan Cricket fan feel proud and privileged that I got to witness in my era one of our boys breaking that record instead of some long dead and buried Englishman.

I’d like to think that I am already doing a better job. Because Mr Chesterfield gets paid to write, I spend my hard earned spare time trying to help out IC so that all Sri Lankan Cricket fans who come here can enjoy and support our team.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway David.

It’s sad your last sentence implies that you are so eager to prove your point than supporting Sri Lanka Cricket, so you are willing and hoping one of our boys to fail!!!

Ai aiyoo David. Aye anne, Ape Mendis kaluda? LOL.

  • Thanks for posting
    Thanks for posting Sujan.

Interesting answers. Regarding Vaas, as they say, action speaks louder than words, so let’s see if anything really will be done.

By the way, what is wrong with the girl asking questions? Why does she have to be a mastermind in Cricket, it was the caller’s questions Sangakara was taking. She was merely the presenter, I thought it was OK.
