  • There’s a marked difference
There’s a marked difference between Sanga’s nearly causing a run-out trying to get his partner’s 100, and Mathews being involved in 64 runouts and just struggling while running in general.

It’s a tough, but fair, call to drop him as he is one of our best batsmen but there being 64 runouts while he’s at the crease is as acceptable as an explanation can get for dropping him.

Hope that he comes back as fit as ever, but for god’s sake don’t make the man captain again!

  • Shame Shanaka wasn’t already
Shame Shanaka wasn’t already in the Caribbean, between him and De Silva the 5th bowler role would’ve been covered without having to compromise the batting too much. In this side, with 4 keepers it’s practically a liability when the remaining batsmen can’t turn their arm over at all.

Most likely straight swaps of Fernando and De Silva for Gamage and Mathews. Fair chance of Dananjaya getting the nod ahead of Dilruwan, and a very slim chance of Udawatte making his way into the XI.

  • Didn’t go into Chandimal too
Didn’t go into Chandimal too much because he appears to have only been in the side as a captaincy replacement for Mathews. In the long term, we can’t play both Tharanga and Chandimal in the same T20 side as it’ll slow things down too much.

Between the two of them, Tharanga seems better suited to the role of playing the batsman who holds up one end and goes along at a reasonable pace. I’m personally not too sure how long this ploy of using him as a floater is going to work because I don’t think his game is suited to it.

A lot of the issues stem from the lack of cemented captain in the side and I’ll probably wind up writing another post on the whole captaincy saga at some point since it certainly needs a full post rather than a long comment.
