Great article Hilal, makes a lot of sense.

SLC has hit an all time low.

This is not the last we have heard about this, there will be a revolt, maybe not now but my gut feeling is that there will be an explosion and I have a feeling that it will be before a major tournament possibly the Champions League this year.

My opinion on this is that…

SLC are going to be the ultimate losers. Like it or not as they have done so far, the cricketers have stuck to their guns.

    1) The Team Sponsorship is up for negotiation and if this drags on will definitely impact that.
    2) The TV rights are up for negotiation and will be impacted.
    3) Series tenders for SLC will also be affected as the best team available isnt on the park
    4) Boards hosting Sri Lanka will be reluctant to host a second-string team.

In the case of the 1st three points…these are the main revenue generators and only come with team exposure and the strength and visibility of the Sri Lankan team.

Unless the SLC adjusts and negotiates, Sri Lanka will miss out on a generation of cricketers. It’s very possible that you could have freelance cricketers (aka WICB and Gayle) coming to the fore and guess-what Sri Lanka Cricket on the whole will loose out.

I hope this drags out and becomes a national issue and there is some move to address the plague that is the SLC at the moment. Also as a Sri Lankan fan, I hope we come close to losing to Bangladesh, simply to knock some sense into these so called administrators

I’m glad Matthews and Chandimal stuck to their guns and are part of the protest, by dismissing player managers (every other player in the world has one) and appointing young captains I’m sure their was hope that would baulk at such pressure. Also the fact that SLC doesnt recognize the SLPA leaves the players to be manipulated. The next step taken by the players is to appoint contract lawyers, who could argue the case in terms of law.

Our cricketers are probably some of the least paid in the top teams, as far as I know.

Plus I believe that the SLC should contract less players. Have a pool of national players and then have monthly retainers for the rest as that will help to disperse income appropriately.

I hope that Sri Lanka cricket survives this, the fallout is going to be much greater than any of these so-called administrators expect. At this rate the revenue that they are chasing is going to be lost because of this haggling.

With regards to the major sticking points of new contracts
    1. Scrapping of 25 per cent guarantee fee to players from ICC events – This should be due to the players, scrapping it altogether would be a farce.

    2. Deduction of salary for players taking part in IPL – This is double-dipping to the same pond as 10% is already charged by the board. Take one or the other. I would probably say choose the one of higher-value.

    3. Scrapping of one business class air ticket per year for wives – Non-issue

    4. Reducing number of contract categories – They should differentiate to allow different cricketers to earn their appropriate wage, according to the cricket that they play.

  • The pitches at Pallekelle
The pitches at Pallekelle aren’t that bad! We’ve had some very attacking cricket on those pitches and other than a couple of balls, that seamed a bit, there was nothing dramatic. Plus there was more turn than Premadasa.

Even the Hambantota pitch according to the commentators before it rained and got covered was the driest with very little grass. If the game had started at 3:30, I’m sure the fast bowlers wouldn’t have looked that ominous.

Anyway I’d rather be in Group 1 than Group 2. It’s surely the group of death. What would be interesting is to watch India once there has been some rain and the pitch starts zipping around with the extra bounce from the firmness of the pitch.

  • Sorry to disappoint you but
Sorry to disappoint you but your super 8 teams are wrong and everything thereafter!

The current format means that the teams actually hold onto their positions and move onto the next round regardless of whether they top the group or not.

Provided that there are no major upsets the super 8 groups should look like.

    Group 1
    ——-
    England
    West Indies
    Sri Lanka
    New Zealand

    Group 2
    ——-
    India
    Australia
    South Africa
    West Indies

  • @Hilal!
    Couldn’t agree with

    @Hilal!

Couldn’t agree with you more. Kohli’s probably the only out and out batsmen who’s had the most success against him in recent times from India.

Sri Lanka newspaper sports journalists (especially after Trevor C) forget that the ethics of journalism that you must look at everything subjectively and look at fact and not harp on about something that they don’t know 100% about. I’ve seen the contents of this article about 10 times in the last 6 months. I still don’t get what Rex is trying to prove.

If Rex was a doctor I wouldn’t say a word but the fact that he isn’t and continuously questions Malinga’s knees is just pathetic and appalling. Knees do a lot of things, I’ve seen the worst of it. Bowling was never meant to be part of the human physique (the motion of running in, landing hard and trying to stop almost immediately are not natural). Doing it over 5 days is even more irregular and for long periods at a time. Malinga’s action by far is the worst for Bowling in terms of the strain exerted and I wish someday that these so called “Sport Journalists”, who is a despotic basketball as well, learns more about what a human physique is all about before making statements.

Cricketers like everyone else has to think about families and their own welfare. If they have the opportunity to make money they’ll take it. Like any other person would. Case in point (the Champions League)….not a single foreign star will feature in their own country’s league team and instead will focus on an IPL team.
