I saw Dasun Shanaka bat last season in 3 or 4 domestic T20 matches and in each occasion he came in at no.6 or 7 and smashed every bowler from the very first ball and hit massive sixes out of the grounds. Seriously, those sixes were out of the grounds.

He only made 30s and 40s but those runs were high impact runs. What really impressed me was that he hit sixes quite effortlessly, as if he was pulverizing a U13 school side.

He’s blessed with enormous power but is also a sweet timer, somewhat like Milinda Siriwardena but with more power. It does not surprise me that he hit two hundreds this season, from no.4 position.

  • Binura Fernando is a giant
Binura Fernando is a giant compared to other pace bowlers in SL and strongly-built [for a 19-year-old]. He lacks pace but generates awkward bounce [at least for local batsmen] and, most importantly, is very accurate. There is no point in pace if one cannot control it.

I watched a few matches and was impressed with the talent and skills of some of the youngsters: Danushka Gunathileka, Minod Bhanuka, Binura Fernando, Dasun Shanaka [starts off on 5th gear and hits humongous sixes out of the grounds], Kasun Madushanka, Dushmantha Chameera [seriously fast to the naked eye but wayward] to name a few.

Honestly, some of these young chaps look more talented than the likes of Sangakkara, Samaraweera, Dilshan, Vaas were at that age.

They need to be keen students of the game and evolve quickly to be successful in ODIs, T20s and Tests. No lack of talent, that much is certain. Let’s hope they have the temperament and work ethic. We need to be patient too.

Ramith Rambukwella is the biggest hitter in the subcontinent: he can hit a six from Maitland Place to the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway and at will.

He is also a brilliant off spinner with 12 variations. Another plus point is that his ground fielding is electric; moves like a black panther and pounces on the ball – in fact, his fielding is on par with Jonty Rhodes.

What a load of bunkum! The only people who have faith in SLC are the henchmen of you know who.

Nishantha Ranatunga must be of the opinion that fans are blithering idiots to listen to his spin doctoring. Oh, what a tangled web he weaves.

NR is a brown-nosing lackey. Period. Fans know the truth, we’re not brainwashed by state-run media.
