As you say, the two likeliest long-term contenders appear to be Tharanga and Mathews. I don’t know what sort of character Tharanga is and whether he has leadership potential but he has a bit more experience and is less likely to have injury worries. If Mathews is identified as the best leader in the long term, then I think it makes sense to appoint Dilshan as ODI/T20 captain at least until the 2012 World T20 and then reassess whether Mathews is ready.

    Thanks for the comments guys.

@stormy and others – I agree with stormy that leaving Randiv out of the original squad made sense in order to have variety through the tournament, and then the injury before the final opened up the possibility to make a specialist selection to face India. I might still have opted for Mendis but I don’t think you can blame the selectors’ logic too much.

@Anonymous – It’s definitely true that IPL helps Indian players get exposure to unorthodox bowlers but if those bowlers are genuinely class, they will still do well when the mystery wears off. Our players benefit from the IPL too. I think Dilshan has definitely benefitted from his time with Delhi Daredevils and Mathews will have learnt from having Wasim Akram as a bowling coach at Kolkata.

@Hilal – thanks for putting the photo up on the post!
