Batting so slow! Why are they batting like its a test match? Scotland will chase a total below 300 easily.
Yeah seems bit slow. But they will gradually improve on that. What we should do is putting a strong foundation up front without blasting all over the park. That’s what happened recent past we scored fast but at the end of 10th over it was 3-4 wickets down. We are still capable of beating half of the teams in the world cup easily if they get a good start.
We have some positive points from this match and should build on those to improve our batting approach during the next two warm up matches.
(1) Avishka’s approach was good, but he should improve on his shot making to play along the ground rather than hitting most of them into the infield fielders. His footwork also has to improve, and he hit the ball most of the time not moving his feet at all.
(2) I like the way Dimuth batted early in the inning. Although it was a bit slow with his SR in the 40’s / 50’s, during the middle overs he increased it tremendously towards 90% by scoring many boundaries. He made the biggest mistake in his inning when he tried to score a six towards mid wkt area and offered a catch to the fielder at deep mid on. He is not a batsman to score sixes, and when there is a capable guy on the other side (Kusal Mendis) he should have avoided playing that risky shot and keep on increasing the RR by scoring only boundaries with his favorite cricketing shots. He could have easily scored a century today and we would have reached a total of 350 runs very easily.
(3) Idea of sending Thisara early was good move. Always there has to be a fast scoring ora power hitting batsman batting with a slow scoring batsman like Thirimanna, Dimuth or even Mathews (he is very slow at the start of his inning). But as usual Thisara played a very irresponsible rash shot by throwing his bat unnecessarily, to be out with a first ball duck. Anyway we need to promote one of the three power hitters (Thisara, Jeewan or Udana) if the RR at 35 overs is not adequate and need to be increased by a big margin during the last 10 to 15 overs.
(4) Other option is Dananjaya should take the responsibility but he didn’t do anything worthwhile in todays match.
Considering the fact that SL did not play any competitive ODI match during the last 2 months, todays performance can be considered as good and hope our bowlers will do a good job and defend this total well but keeping in mind that chasing 323 on this ground is not that difficult.
