  1. Although I would not want to compare players’s T20 performances in team selection criteria for the WC, there is one very important aspect out of this years WC requirements that has been totally ignored by our SLC SELECTORS as well majority of the members in this forum. That is the strength and ability in Power Hitting of our opening and lower middle order batsmen. That is why I am posting this video and forwarding my comments herewith.

I THINK SRI LANKA COULD BE ONE OF THE VERY FEW COUNTRIES WHERE VERY OLD TEAM SELECTION CRITERIA ARE STILL BEING USED IN SELECTING THEIR PROBABLE 15 PLAYERS FOR THE WC.

ALSO EITHER OUR SELECTORS DO NOT HAVE A CLEAR VISION OR THEY STILL DO NOT KNOW THE DEMANDING & HIGH STANDARDS OF BATSMAN’S REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS YEARS WC. IN SIMPLE TERMS THEY STILL HAVE NOT REALIZED THE IMPORTANCE OF POWER HITTING ABILITY OF A BATSMAN.

TOP 5/6 COUNTRIES HAVE ALLOWED THEIR WC PROBABLE POWER HITTING BATSMEN TO PLAY IN THIS YEARS IPL MATCHES TO GAIN MORE EXPERIENCE ON THIS ASPECT OF THE GAME, WHICH WILL BE THE MOST ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENT IN THIS YEARS WC TO SCORE HUGE TEAM TOTALS LIKE 350+ RUNS.

WHAT IS SLC DOING INSTEAD OF THAT IN THEIR PREPARATORY WORK? ALLOWING SCHOOLBOYS (who dont have any experience on International cricket) TO TAKE PART IN THIS VERY IMPORTANT PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT. (which should have a pool of ONLY 60 (in 4 squads) the most suitable players who have got the previous experience). Having a pool of 84 players and diluting the strength & quality of the team playing in every match could be the biggest JOKE OF OUR SELECTORS BEFORE THIS VERY IMPORTANT WC).

SELECTORS, PLEASE LOOK AT THE WAY (as mentioned in this video) SOME OF THE PROBABLE POWER HITTING BATSMEN LIKE GAYLE (WI), WARNER(Australia), BAIRSTOW (England), MAXELL (Australia) etc, etc who score runs at 150% to 200% SRs.

OUR CUPBOARD IS TOTALLY EMPTY. Do we have a single consistently performing Power Hitting batsmen to open the innings or to bat at no 6 or 7 position? NO.

OUR SELECTORS ARE DREAMING ON THIS YEARS WC, BOASTING ON A RECENT TEST VICTORY and including EVEN test match players who do not have a average SR of even 80% and are not the correct choices for the WC Team. May be we need one or two good & consistently performing test batsmen among the top 7 batsmen. OTHER 5 BATTERS SHOULD CONSIST OF AT LEAST 3 POWER HITTERS (who can score at more than 120%) and two aggressive technically perfect batsmen who can achieve at least 90% SR.

SLC HAVE SO FAR NOT DEVELOPED ANY POWER HITTING OR AGGRESSIVE BATSMAN FOR THIS YEARS WC. WHAT A SHAME.

IN MY OPINION such slow scoring batsmen like Tharanga, Tirimanna, Chandimal, Asela, should not be included in our squad. If we include these slow scoring or inconsistently performing batsmen in ODI formats we will not be able to score even 250 run team totals when other teams have developed fast scoring batsmen to score well over 350 runs per inng..

THAT’S THE SAD PART OUR WC PREPARATION PLAN OF SLC.
