We were not planning on scoring 144, we wanted to win – Angelo Mathews

May 11, 2010 (islandcricket.lk): Sri Lankan all rounder Angelo Mathews says that his team always planned on going for the win against India as opposed to aiming for 145 runs which would have been sufficient to keep their chances of entering the semi finals alive whilst eliminating India from the ICC World twenty20.

"We wanted to win the match first. We were not planning on scoring 144," Mathews said.

India needed to restrict Sri Lanka below 144 runs in order to stand a chance of qualifying for the semi finals. While the Sri Lankan batsman had the option of aiming for 145 instead of going after the 163 runs set by India.

Mathews won the man of the match award for his 46 runs off 37 balls which included two sixers.

"Winning against India is a big victory for us. I thought all the boys chipped in really well with the bat and ball," he added.
