December 26, 2010 (Island Cricket): The Premier League Tier-A Limited Overs Tournament, which is scheduled to get underway on Monday after multiple postponements due to bad weather, is expected to provide some recourse for Sri Lanka’s selectors who are keen on observing Sri Lanka’s World Cup hopefuls before they announce their final ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 squad.

Aravinda de SilvaBut after weeks of clear skies, the Greater Colombo Area is once again experiencing overcast conditions which threaten, yet again, to hinder Aravinda de Silva’s selection panel.

After inclement weather conditions in early December forced the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) to postpone their five-match ODI series to late January, the Sri Lankan selectors found themselves faced with a situation where they would be forced to rely on the Premier League Tier-A Limited Overs Tournament to finalise their World Cup squad.

However, Aravinda de Silva, the Chairman of Selectors, told reporters earlier this month that his panel had already identified 11 players to be named in Sri Lanka’s final 15-man squad, thereby giving the impression that the selectors were close to finalising the squad ahead of the January 19 deadline.

“We have a basic idea of about 10-11 players but there are a few places which we need to work out, and if we can get some cricket before the final selection it would be ideal,” de Silva said.

But de Silva admitted that the lack of cricket prevented the selectors from working out their “ultimate combination”.

“Missing those five ODIs against West Indies was very crucial because we were really looking at finding an ultimate combination before picking the final 15,” he said.

“There were things which we wanted to try in the five ODIs. It was very unfortunate we missed out on it, but nevertheless we have a basic idea of what we are looking for.”

The following 11 players from the 30-man preliminary squad are expected to make it to the final squad: Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardena, Muttiah Muralitharan, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Angelo Mathews, Thisara Perera, Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Kulasekara, Upul Tharanga, Thilan Samaraweera, Dilhara Fernando.

  1. Selectors have already said
Selectors have already said that Jayasuriya and Vaas will be considered only if needed, or something along those lines.

    ————-

Last week, Sri Lanka’s selectors, Aravinda de Silva, Ranjit Fernando, Shabir Asgerally and Amal Silva announced a 30-man preliminary squad which included Sanath Jayasuriya and Chaminda Vaas – both, members of Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup winning team.

Neither Vaas, nor Jayasuriya have played international cricket in recent months, which suggests their inclusion in the final squad will be entirely reliant on their performances at the upcoming Premier League.

“We all know what they can do, but we also have to consider current form,” de Silva said, when asked about the inclusion of the two veterans.

de Silva said the selectors were satisfied with Sri Lanka’s current crop of players, but will consider the veterans if they feel the squad needed the wealth of experience the two had to offer.

“It is only if there is an absolute requirement and necessity that we will look at them. We need experience as well as good performances.”

  2. why did your guys put Dilhara
why did your guys put Dilhara Fernando instead of Chaminda Vaas?
Vaas is the most experienced opening bowler who can control any situation. He is a good allrounder too. If you want to win matches,
put Vaas instead of Dilhara. Don’t make this mistake again.

  3. Oh Man where is MASTER
Oh Man where is MASTER BLASTER,,,, Dear SANGA, If u want to win this world pls put JAYASURIYA instead of some one SAMARAWEERA may be because THARANGA can play as a middle order batsman.
Believe me my friends SANATH JAYASURIYA can get man of series 2nd time that will be another world record. 1st cricketer get man of the tournament 2 times in the world cup,,,
BEST OF LUCK SANATH AIYA U CAN DO IT AGAIN

  4. Ohh Boy.. are you people
Ohh Boy.. are you people serious about the inclusion of Jayasooriya… I can think of only one thing on you people who want Jayasooriya on the field: you have not watched cricket during the past few years! He was the most loved cricketer before and now….? I (rather most of us) would NOT want to see the Lankan team with 10 players and an MP! Please do not make the mistake we did during the T20 WC. How many runs did this Jayasooriya score during the entire series? Seriously! Either Jayasooriya himself has posted these comments I feel… If not… Well I dont know how to describe you people other than DUMB-ASSES!
Regarding Vaasy… He was performing alright at the English Counties! But you just cant compare county matches with I’national matches! However, I will not have any problem him being on the final 15 since he performed! But, not JAYASOORIYA!
