The first ODI between New Zealand and Sri Lanka in Pallekele has been abandoned without a ball being bowled as a result of heavy rain.

The tour opener, a one-off T20 match on October 30 at the same venue, was also curtailed by rain.

New Zealand’s tour to Sri Lanka has inexplicably been scheduled during the island’s wet season.

The ODI leg of the tour now moves to Colombo, where more inclement weather is expected to greet both teams.

New Zealand are in Sri Lanka for a full tour that features a one-off T20, five ODIs and two Test matches.

The second ODI takes place at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on November 4.
