Angelo Mathews has been appointed captain of Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 team and will captain Sri Lanka in the solitary Twenty20 fixture in the series against New Zealand later this month.
Mathews has been handed over the reigns in Twenty20s for a period of one year.
Nuwan Kulasekara, 30, has been appointed his deputy for the Twenty20 against New Zealand. However, Lasith Malinga, who has been rested for the match against the Black Caps, was named as Mathews’ deputy for one year.
Mathews replaces Mahela Jayawardene after the latter stepped down at the end of the ICC World Twenty20 2012.
The 25-year-old, who was vice-captain during the recent World Twenty20 tournament, was expected to take over when Jayawardene announced that he was stepping down after the loss to West Indies in the tournament final.
The Twenty20 match, which kicks off New Zealand’s full tour of Sri Lanka, gets underway in Pallekele on October 30.
