A petition has been launched by cricket fans to highlight their displeasure and lack of confidence in the executive committee currently governing Sri Lanka Cricket and the electoral process that has seen candidates mysteriously dropping out of the race at the last minute to allow individuals with ties to the ruling party to win uncontested.
Hosted on the internationally-renowned petition website change.org, the petition has received global coverage and has gathered much momentum in the 24 hours since its launch.
"We have no faith or confidence in the process in place to appoint cricket board officials," the petition states. "As evident by recent elections, the utmost important positions are filled uncontested. We wish to express that such tactics are only viewed by the fans and the cricket-loving public as an insult to our intelligence."
The petition calls on the Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa to replace the current executive-committee "and place the governing of cricket within an interim-committee headed by a reputed, trusted and ethical individual."
In addition, it stresses on the need to allow a new committee "sufficient time and authority to refocus on what is in the best interest of Sri Lanka Cricket and plan for a fair and democratic transfer of the administration of cricket to qualified individuals with high moral and ethical standards."
