June 08, 2010 (islandcricket.lk): Chandika Hathurusingha, a member of the coaching staff on tour with the national team currently in Zimbabwe, has been suspended on disciplinary grounds.
Hathurusingha was appointed in 2009 as an understudy to the coach and assistant coach. He is said to have returned to Sri Lanka midway through the ongoing cricket tournament in Zimbabwe, which Somchandra de Silva the Chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) says led to his suspension.
Despite being advised to remain with the team till the end of the tour, Hathurusingha, opted to return to Sri Lanka early in order to spend time with his family before flying to Australia for a training programme for coaches.
"I advised him that he can return home only if Sri Lanka fails to qualify for the final not otherwise. Despite me giving him clear instructions to be with the team for the final he returned home on Saturday," de Silva told Cricinfo.
"Hathurusingha’s action is a clear breach of discipline and we have taken the decision to suspend him until an inquiry is held. He will be given the chance to explain his conduct before we decide on further action," he added.
