Wanindu breaks T20I bowling record

Sri Lanka’s leg spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has broken the record for most wickets in a calendar year in T20Is during the ongoing T20 World Cup.

Wanindu surpassed South Africa’s T Shamsi (2021) who has now taken 32 wickets in 2021.

Australia’s Andrew Tye (2018) who took 31 wickets had the record before this year with 31 wickets in a calendar year.

The Sri Lankan leg-spinner now has 34 wickets to his name in 2021 and he is also the world number 2 bowler in the T20I rankings.

In the list of most wickets in T20Is in 2021, Shamsi and Wanindu Hasaranga are the only bowlers who are playing the T20 World Cup 2021 and have more than 30 wickets to their name.

Bangladesh left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman picked 26 wickets in 2021. (CricWire)
