Since the retirements of batsmen in the calibre of Tillakaratne Dilshan, Thilan Samaraweera, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara in the past eight years, Sri Lanka has been found desperately wanting of quality batsmen who could score consistently.
The degeneration of such batsmen has had an overbearing effect on the results obtained in Test cricket, where Sri Lanka’s performance can be termed mediocre in comparison to what they achieved prior to 2015, when the last of the four batsmen mentioned retired from the Test scene…
How long have we be saying this – batters and technique. I recall a discussion yonks ago on this forum on the lack of a young batter with a decent technique – then the two stars were Chandi and Thiri and after all these years, Thiri is still fiddling around averaging in the low 20s in test cricket – that’s how desperate the situation is that the best we can come up with is a tried tested and failed guy who averages in the low 20s in test cricket – and now he has scored a hundred so will play till her retires. Hopefully he improves on the 22 average!
