Minister wants IPL matches played in SL

Answering a question regarding the failure of the stadium to generate sufficient funds to cover even the cost of its maintenance, the Minister opined hosting a few IPL matches at Sooriyawewa would be benefitted, and expressed his intention of discussing this plan with Indian officials sometime in the future.

Just as with the proposed high altitude training centre in Nuwara Eliya, Sooriyawewa Stadium was built on the premise that return on investment would be high as a venue that would be sought after and rented by international teams and organizations for a variety of sporting events and training programmes; but after several years its sole use has been by local farmers as a popular spot for drying paddy, chili and similar produce.
