Kusal Mendis fit for Australia tour

Sri Lanka batsman Kusal Mendis

Sri Lankan star batsman Kusal Mendis has recovered and has passed the fitness test ahead of the Twenty20 International Series in Australia which begins on October 27.

The 24-year-old was out of cricket since he had suffered a knee injury following an on-field collision with Shehan Jayasuriya during a T20I match against New Zealand at the Pallekele Stadium on September 3.

Meanwhile, Lasith Malinga (now as captain) and two other players – Niroshan Dickwella and Kusal Janith Perera – who did not travel to Pakistan for security fears have been included in the side.

Twelve players who travelled to Pakistan to play the three T20 Internationals have retained their place for the forthcoming tour of Australia.

The four players who travelled to Pakistan but will miss the series against Australia are likely to be Angelo Perera, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Lahiru Madushanka and Minod Bhanuka.

  1. I think the way Sandakan has performed in Pakistan it may be too early for him to join this squad. It will be like asking a person who is learning how to swim to try in the deep end.

He is so erratic in his line. Although he has many variations he is not a strong wicket taking bowler yet and concedes too many runs in his 4 overs. Either SLC should have picked a young, tall & accurate, wkt to wkt bowler who has performed well recently with in international outings (like Ramesh Mendis). Or use only Vanidu as he has around 30% factor of using his googlies which can be used against the left hand batsmen. I would rather go with the second option.

If Sandakan is picked in the squad, better use him as a second option as we will have to play four seamers Malinga, Pradeep, Rajitha and Lahiru together with 4 overs from Vanidu which will give a strong bowling attack as well as have the better team balance than using Sandakan in place of a batting all rounder.
