Mathews dropped for Australia tour, Sri Lanka T20I captain Malinga admits

Former captain Angelo Mathews will need to resume bowling if he wants to break into the T20I team, the current captain Lasith Malinga admitted yesterday.

Angelo Mathews

“We know what sort of a player he is and the value he brings to the team. But, he has been injury-prone over the past few years. However, he’s fit now. If he can manage to bowl four overs and perform with the bat, the door is still open for him in T20I’s,” Malinga said of Angelo Mathews during the press briefing held at the SLC headquarters.

Mathews was not a part of the squad which faced New Zealand at home and before he opted out of the Pakistan tour due to security reasons. However, for the New Zealand series, the selectors are understood to have sidelined Mathews because of the slow scoring-rate at the start of an innings and lackluster speed in the field…

  1. I think it will be end of the road for Angelo for T 20 matches. His very slow start is the main issue, and not his bowling. After the introduction of Wanidu who is a also a batting allrounder, the team balance has tremendously improved. Together with Wanidu, SL cextra batsman / batting allrounder to play at no 7. So both Angelo’s and Dhananjaya’s (DDS) presence will not be required now.

Five specialist bowlers means Angelo’s 2/3 overs of part time seam bowling can be avoided. So that plus his slow start means SL will be performing better w/o Angelo.

But he has to start bowling in ODI matches.

  2. Also the main problem is our selectors have to first identify the strengths of the first 7 batsmen in the T 20 team. and see whether all 7 batsmen can satisfy the very tough demands in T 20 batting . More batsmen who dont waste time by facing many dot balls (especially at the start of an inning) and who can bat aggressively in improving their SRs by scoring more sixes and boundaries at regular intervals get a chance to play in a T 20 match. So Mathews style of batting is not like that. Chandimal is a worst batsman (for T 20) even below Mathews.

As we have almost found a genuine all rounder like Wanidu we can avoid 2/3 overs of bowling from a part timer. With Wanidu playing in the team SL can play 4 more wkt taking specialist bowlers and the 20 overs can be bowled only by 5 strike bowlers. So Mathews 2/3 overs will not be required. But that may be useful in ODI matches

  3. Mathews needs to get fit and concentrate on limited over cricket please. He is unfit and too slow for limited over cricket and his bowling is no longer relevant, you can’t be bowling 120KMH pies around and claim to be an bowling option.
