Chose Malinga over Pandya for final over because of experience – Sharma

Lasith Malinga

Mumbai Indians Captain Rohit Sharma admitted that while he considered Hardik Pandya to bowl the final over with Chennai needing just nine runs to win the title, he chose Lasith Malinga for the task because of the Sri Lankan’s proven experience in such situations in the past. Malinga had conceded 42 runs in his three overs so far and with Shane Watson, who had slammed 20 runs off him in the 16th over, still unbeaten, Rohit measured the risk before entrusting his leading bowler to deliver the goods. Malinga came through, conceding just seven and bowling a perfect yorker to dismiss Shardul Thakur off the last delivery with two needed for a win.

  1. I would have picked Hardick after Malinga’s two previous overs going the full distance but that is why I am sitting behind a key board while guys like Rohith get paid millions to make the actual calls and legends like Malinga write their own destiny.

What an awesome last over by Malinga and what a last ball. He made a calculated call to come back over the wicket and most importantly was able to deliver a pin point slow ball. It was not Malinga’s best IPL but what a legend for scripting his own story in the very last over the tournament. Worth noting he was bowling 140+ in the final too and that’s after ages.
