  1. Here we go with our next favorite past time – lets change the captain! My call is “someone else”. We have tried everything else and it’s simply not worked so why would be keep trying it again. I suspect we will jump at Dimuth in desperation expecting another miracle but the fact is does he even play white ball cricket for his club! I would pick a younger player as an investment for the next world cup.

  2. It’s so weird that we’re even having this conversation. We change captains and players who are expected to bat in crucial positions in the top order after almost every series or tournament. For a losing side like Sri Lanka, a stable and consistent batting order is perhaps the way to go.

When you’re winning regularly and have a strong team that is performing consistently, you can afford to introduce youth to the side and experiment a bit. We won’t find a magical winning combination by axing players after every match.

Changing the captain before the World Cup is a gamble, and we have no guarantee that it will work – so why gamble so close to such an important tournament?

Years ago, many of the public didn’t even know the name of the chief selector, and ever since Jayasuriya took over and Labrooy succeeded him, the chief selector has been in the limelight and faced criticism by many of our cricket greats for the lack of consistency in team selections. Many players have been thrown in and discarded without a proper run, and it has never been more easier than today to earn your national cap.

There is no strategy or long-term plan in place, and that’s what is evident when they keep changing the side after every series.

I would stick with the same captain we have. Throwing Dimuth into the ODI side and making him captain is a good way to lose him (happened to Chandimal after they made him captain for WT20) and it won’t be long before Dimuth will be discarded and lose his place from the Test side too, if the World Cup campaign ends miserably.

Don’t encourage SLC officials to keep making changes – demand consistency in team selections and better management instead.
