TOP STORIES

  • It’s been one week since England won the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. So congratulations to them! With that said, today, let’s look at Sri Lanka’s performance in the World Cup. (2022)

Sri Lanka went into the tournament with confidence after winning the Asia Cup but didn’t start well as they lost to Namibia. However, the Lions bounced back to win their two remaining games and qualify for the super 12s. The super 12s were a mixed bag for Sri Lanka as they won 2 and lost 3 but importantly fought in all the matches. Overall, Sri Lanka’s performance in the World Cup was decent.

Award Winner:

  • Pathum Nissanka (214 runs): 1 player of the match award (2022)

  • Kusal Mendis (223 runs): 2 player of the match awards (2022)

  • Wanindu Hasaranga (15 wickets): 1 player of the match award and most wickets (2022)

What went wrong for Sri Lanka

The decisive factor of Sri Lanka’s matches was the execution of plans! This is because in most of their games how they executed their plan resulted in them winning or losing. This was especially seen against the top teams where at key moments Sri Lanka failed to execute their plans properly and ended up losing the match. Asides from this, poor fielding and batting collapses especially of the middle order were another factor in Sri Lanka not qualifying for the knockouts.

What Sri Lanka did well

Where Sri Lanka did well throughout this tournament is that they fought till the end regardless of whether they won or not, this was good to see as it resembles the old Sri Lankan cricket everyone knows. Moreover, different players stepped up in different matches for Sri Lanka just like the Asia Cup, this is a big positive for Sri Lanka as they don’t need to rely on one player always and could rely on different players giving them depth.

Summary

Overall, this World Cup wasn’t the best for Sri Lanka nor was it the worst. The team was able to fight in all the matches and played good cricket for the most part. Moreover, as a result of Sri Lanka finishing fourth in the super 12 table in group A they have directly qualified for the super 12 of the 2024 T20 World Cup which is a big positive (2022). In conclusion, Sri Lanka had a decent World Cup despite the results showing otherwise but they will overall be happy with four wins out of eight matches.

Notable Performances:

  • Maheesh Theekshana: 9 wickets (2022)

  • Lahiru Kumara: 7 wicktes (2022)

  • Dhananjaya de Silva: 6 wickets and 177 runs (2022)

  • Charith Asalanka: 131 runs (2022)

  • Bhanuka Rajapakse: 125 runs (2022)

  1. There is going to be an inquiry about a Pastor who prophesied that Sri Lanka would not going to win the T20 Cup.He takes credit that he predicted that SL would win the Asia Cup.The suspicious issue is that this pastor’s born again prodigy Bhanuka who was the player of the series in the asia cup failed miserably in the WC.We could have won easily over NZ or England after the good start if Bhanuka did score decent runs. But strangely enough he did not.Was it by purpose he failed?? Why? Was it a born again conspiracy to show how great that pastor & how right the born again religion? Even the captain is in their religion. His mate Chameera too seems to have a ‘muscle injury”.Not Chameera’s long ankle injury. Other Ragama pastor mate Binura too went down suddenly with a muscle injury. The pastor had predicted a few of our players would be down with injuries.Isn’t there something crooked here??Born again conpiracy?
