Stop this circus!

Sri Lanka Cricketers Training

We all know that SLC is one of the most corrupt bodies on the island and given as to how Mr.Shammi keeps getting re-elected , trying to get them to change anything is simply useless. However there’s  a whole lot of other people who can make a change such as the head coach , the technical committees , the captain etc. They can at least take a firm stance on matters.

Mickey Arthur is becoming somewhat of a yes man to all of SLC’s  circus acts . KJP seems to be a captain who is simply going to follow the same path . For KJP to captain properly there have to be a bunch of ‘real’ seniors of the likes of Dimuth , Mathews , Chandimal, Thisara to give him that backing to influence the team without any fear . Personally I feel that the team selectors are making a massive blunder by having no proper seniors in the team . There’s nobody to control the players , hence the incident with Mendis, Dikka and Danushka (seniors lol).

What is the basis on which these new players are being hand picked into the squads ? All I see is muddled short term decision making including that from Mickey Arthur . He has a complete new plan with a complete new set of players for each series. For example Pathum Nissanka is clearly a promising young talent, however it only takes a glance at his domestic records to realise that he is yet finding his feet in ODI cricket . Putting him under such pressure to perform given the team’s circumstances would only result in a breakdown of his confidence and promise . The correct approach would be to let him find his feet in the test setup ( which he is clearly suited to ) also given that the test team is more stable .

With regards to decision making relating to team selection I can’t quite understand how certain ‘proven’ players have been overlooked repeatedly and ignored past their prime cricketing seasons . For example Roshen Silva was overlooked right throughout the time he had a lasting purple patch in the domestic arena. Another example was how Asela Gunaratnes career was ruined by the foolish selection committees that were responsible , simply because he was in his early 30s and them wanting to make a team full of ‘babies’ with regards to international experience and overall maturity . On this note another baffling exclusion is Angelo Perera. This is another wasted talent along with the likes of Banuka Rajapakshe, who should’ve been groomed into the team much sooner . Angelo Pereras list A’ average is 42 at a strike-rate of 95 (cricinfo stats) . This is significanty higher than most other players who’ve been given extended chances to prove themselves . The selectors have simply left him out of the plans altogether .

The first step Sri Lanka needs to do to stop this circus leading upto the 2023 CWC , is to bring back some experienced players into the side . Dimuth , Mathews, Thirimanne are certain possible inclusions. Further players of match winning capacity such as Avishka, Banuka and Angelo Perera should be given extended runs in the team . On the bowling front , Sri Lanka has immense potential to string up a quality match winning bowling contingent with Chameera and Hasaranga as our trump cards. Further the likes of Kumara , Pradeep , Sandakan , Akila should be included . Shanaka should definitely be persisted with and DDS should be given the chance to bat higher up the order at  no.4.

There should be a mix of experience as well as young blood for any team to be successful . That’s where the likes of Dimuth and Mathews come in . Simply changing the Coach or captain or as it has been, the entire squad,  won’t get us anywhere . Personally I would be happy to never see kusal Mendis represent our country again . He has repeatedly made a fool out of all those who put their confidence in him and trusted him to come good , and I am not simply pointing towards his performances on the field . Discipline is vital for any team, and guys like Danushka cannot be controlled by any captain .Hence these types of behaviour should be severly punished .

  1. A team that cannot even score 250 in 50 overs and was losing to Bangladesh thought they can improve by removing their best players (seniors). That joker Mickey Mouse has to go. Moody is also just there to collect his salary. Too many cooks and too many idiotic ideas.

  2. This was highlighted during the commentary in the previous ODI . Before trying to score big totals in excess of 300, try and first get used to setting a basic total for our bowlers to defend every match , consistently . Something around 250-280 every match , depending on the pitch. Then once we make it a habit , we can set plans to hit those 300+ scores which is the norm in ODI cricket nowadays .
