The Sri Lankan team made a terrible selection blunder for the 4th ODI by excluding Akila Dananjaya out of the match.
When we look at it…the preview and the match coverage looked at the pitch and commenting the spinners would play an important role. Also the Port Elizabeth pitch has a record for favouring spinners.
Knowing this, yet the lead spinner Akila Dananjaya was left out of the team for the 4th ODI and part timers Dhananjaya De Silva and Kamindu Mendis were used, understandingly to strengthen the batting order as well.
But as the match was being played we saw the part timer Dhananjya De Silva himself getting three top order wickets , that too of the inform batsmen Quinton De Kock and Faf Du Plesis and also having significant control throughout his overs.
Only if Akila Dananjaya too had been playing for the 4th ODI, there would be a chance to take the game deeper and a slight chance for Sri Lanka to even win the match.
What a selection blunder by the on tour selectors and team captain and also making the mistake of letting down Akila after him making a comeback into the side after correcting his bowling action. Though he took a wicket each in the first 2 ODI’s played against South Africa he maintained the pressure and bowled more dot balls. Only in the 3rd ODI did he go for runs and understandably bowlers tend to have an off day.
Based on just 1 match, the selectors discarded him for the 4th ODI even though the pitch was suitable for spinners, thereby letting down Akila and his confidence.
