MY SRI LANKAN WC SQUAD

Sri Lanka's Nuwan Pradeep celebrates as Pakistan's Imad Wasim is caught by Niroshan Dickwella

We’ve gone with youth for the recently concluded South African tour and it has only made the situation worse. So I think a mix of experience can do a trick or two in the upcoming WC.

  1. Given what the selectors are saying. The players that will be selected will be those who performes well in their upcoming provincial tournament. I am hoping that Tharanga does not get chosen, and is instead replaced by Dimuth Karunaratne. I would like a team that is close to what we had at the champions trophy a couple of years ago.
    Dimuth Karunaratne
    Dhanushka Gunathilaka
    Kusal Mendis
    Kusal Perera
    Angelo Mathews
    Asela Gunaratne
    Dasun Shanaka/Thisara Perera
    Jeevan Mendis/Akila Dhananjaya
    Isuru Udana
    Suranga Lakmal
    Lasith Malinga

I dont think Chandimal should be in the team as I feel Kusal perera is a better alternative. Akila is a good plauer but after remodelling his action, he hasnt been as effective. Jeevan is quite an old player now but his bowling is consistent and can definitely hit the ball. Thisara has been playing better recently but I still dont think he is reliable with bat or ball. His bowling gets knocked around the park a lot, and he still plays awful shots with the bat. I would much prefer Dasun Shanaka. He does not have as much experience in bowling compared to Thisara but I’m sure he can keep his economy lower than him. The position that will be difficult to select is Gunaratnes spot because he hasnt plaued in a while and I dont know he selectors are still keeping a close eye on him.

  2. Hi Suren, here is my comments on your selection.

Opening pair: By comparing with the opening combinations of other countries, we do have a weakness in the power hitting ability of our openers. If Dimuth is introduced this will be further reduced. Who are the openers we have who can exploit the field restrictions during the first 10 PP1 overs. they should be good timers of / middling the ball, excellent in placing the ball (or bisecting two fielders) and hitting over the top. Both Danushka and Dimuth has a very low R6 ratio (ability to score sixes) although they can score many boundaries, so I am wondering whether we should open with Kusal P. All will depend on the first 10 over scores we can achieve and losing only 1i wkt or less during that period.

I also don’t think that Asels is a proven batting or bowling all rounder who can achieve a SR of even 90% batting at no 6,7 or 8. According to the current form Dasu Shanaka is the only batting allrounder we have and he is a clean hitter of the ball and can achieve more than 150% SR on any batting track. As Thisara is not very consistent these days in his power hitting abilities, Dasun should be given more chances to improve his game. I am surprised why the selectors did not pick him for the ODI or T20) squads for the SA tour. I cannot comment on Jeewan as I haven’t seen his recent performances.
