My Sri Lankan T20 World Cup Squad

With the T20 World Cup less than a year away, I have decided to create a team that could compete in the world cup based on recent performances and form.

1. Danushka Gunathilaka (had strong performances in the ODI series against Pakistan, is a lynchpin at the top of the order, confident playing against fast bowling)

2. Avishka Fernando (still inexperienced but possesses lots of talent, as we saw in the ODI world cup earlier this year)

3. Bhanuka Rajapaksa (the new find from the T20 series against Pakistan, needs to given a consistent run at No.3)

4. Kusal Perera (w) (Sri Lanka’s most consistent batsman, can play anywhere in batting order)

5. Oshada Fernando (proved that he has an attacking style to his game, can hold the batting lineup, needs more opportunities prove himself leading into the world cup)

6. Dasun Shanaka (c) (can play the role of the finisher, also his captaincy credentials shown through in the T20 series win over Pakistan, should be given the captaincy to allow Malinga to focus on his bowling, his bowling also adds another dimension to his game and can be useful in Australian conditions)

7. Wanindu Hasaranga (a useful batsman and leg spin bowler who has success in the recent T20 series against Pakistan who could be a weapon in T20 cricket)

8. Isuru Udana (gives more depth to the batting and can bowl in the death overs)

9. Lakshan Sandakan (a mystery spinner who could harness the slower pitches offered by drop-in pitches)

10. Lasith Malinga (makes the starting XI on the back of experience, however he should not be given the captaincy)

11. Lahiru Kumara (has the pace to trouble the batsman, invaluable in Australian conditions particularly fast and bouncy pitches, his workload needs to be managed for the world cup)

12. Kusal Mendis (despite a good innings against New Zealand, he doesn’t fit into playing XI, also struggled on the fast and bouncy pitches in the recently concluded T20 series against Australia)

13. Niroshan Dickwella (has the shots to play T20 cricket, but hasn’t had any good performances of late, makes the squad as a backup wicketkeeper)

14. Shehan Jayasuriya (makes the squad for his all-round abilities but difficult to accommodate in the final playing XI)

15. Nuwan Pradeep (unlucky to miss out on the final XI, could play in place of Isuru Udana)

  1. I think the balance between youth and experience is a bit off with this squad. Would like to see Angelo Mathews replace Oshada. Oshada performed well but I think having the experience of mathews is more important. A definite no from me about Lakshan Sandakan. This player has lacked consistently every since he started and had not improved at all. He is rarely taling any wickets when he plays. Would prefer to see Akila Dananjaya or a fast bowler depending on the conditions.
