A Repeat of 2014

About a month ago, Sri Lanka won the Asia Cup 2022 in style after enduring a crashing defeat to Afghanistan in their first game. That defeat, however, sparked something within the lions as they went on to win the tournament after 8 years by defeating Pakistan in the final just like they did in 2014. As a result of the Asia Cup win, Sri Lanka goes into the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup with confidence and with less than a day to go for the World Cup, let’s go down memory lane to 2014.
2014 was an incredible year for Sri Lankan cricket as they won their first test series of more than 1 match in England along with the Asia Cup and of course the T20 World Cup. Are you starting to see a connection between 2014 and 2022? Let me elaborate a bit more. On March 8th, 2014, Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan in the Asia Cup final to win their 5th Asia Cup (Google search) and about a month later won their 1st ICC T20 World Cup by beating India in the final on the 6th of April, 2014 (Google search). Is the picture getting clearer?
Now, in 2022, Sri Lanka has yet again won the Asia Cup by beating Pakistan but in the T20 format. Nevertheless, Asia Cup is Asia Cup! With the confidence of winning their 6th Asia Cup, Sri Lanka head into the ICC T20 World Cup with confidence even though they aren’t favourites to win. However, it is important to remember that Sri Lanka always does well in World Cups and is capable of surprising.
