5 young players who can be groomed for the 2023 World Cup

Pathum Nissanka

1) Avishka Fernando

Scored 203 runs in 4 games which includes a hundered at the grandest stage. Known for his aggressive hitting at the top, Avishka is definitely someone to look out for.

2) Wanindu Hasaranga

Known for his batting towards the end of an innings and for his handy leg spin bowling. Came onto the scene when he took a hat-trick on debut in 2017. Hasaranga along with Akila Dananjaya can be a lethal duo on Indian pitches.

3) Asitha Fernando

Did well in the recent Emerging team tour of South Africa as well as the Super-Provincial tournament held before the WC. Could be a handy replacement for the ‘legendary’ Lasith Malinga.

4) Lahiru Kumara

Always knew him for his efforts with the red ball. He’s got the extra pace and bounce, bowls in the low 150s which can be very intimidating. Every team has a bowler who bowls at 140 whether it is Bumrah, Rabada or Archer. For Sri Lanka it is him who can take that role.

5) Pathum Nissanka

Scored tons of runs in the domestic season. Has done well for the ‘A’ team and the Emerging team. Has a first-class average of above 60. May not be known much for white-ball cricket, but he may be ready for the challenge come 2023.

  1. Great to hear of young talent and now the trick is to make sure the talent blossoms in the next 4 years. Time to look beyond the ‘senior and experienced’ guy who have got us no where in the last 4 years. It’s time to start working out what sort of a plan we want for India and then hand picking young talent for the plan – they will have 4 years behind them by the next WC and will be experienced. So for Indian wickets, obviously a couple of decent spinners, hopefully a wrist spinner is a must. As are a couple of decent new ball bowlers who can take wickets and a death bowler. The batting needs a similar plan. So the call is make a plan and work to it. Its not going to workout in 12 months but in 48 months it could. This is why we cannot have politicians messing about as they will come and go within the 4 years.
