Squad selected for the Test series doesn’t excite at all

15 Members squad selected for the Test series doesn’t excite at all..

Avishka Fernando and Danushka Gunathilaka are the 2 guys should have been included. The guys to be invested in to carry SL batting forward to a level where SL can compete with teams like India.

Asitha Fernando is the same for bowling.

And for spin options – nothing exciting.

  1. We cant blame the selectors. They have kept total trust on the same team that played 2 test matches in SA. In fact it was a historical victory & they (the selectors) have every reason for selecting this squad. Although they included Chandimal in the squad there are more chances for Kusal Janith to keep wickets as we need to find a place for Mathews (who didn’t play in SA).

Probably for the 2nd match they may name a new squad with few new faces (like Danushka, Lahiru Kumara, Shehan, Asitha etc)

  2. Further to my above comments I would like to point out a very important point explaining on what basis the selectors have announced these 15 players in order to clear the bad feelings of our fans who are disappointed that some players who performed well during the recent past in ODI, List A & current practice match are not in the squad of 15.

For the squad selection they have considered the performances of the first 9 batsmen (as per the averages), and five best bowlers. They added Sandakan to replace Dilrtuwan who is currently injured. Its a very fair judgement of the selectors. Probably they didn’t want to select players who did not play in recent test matches and do the same mistake as in the WC.

I made a wrong statement in my above comment in the last para when I mentioned the names Danushka, Shehan and Asitha as they dont have any previous test match experience so probably will not be in the plan of the selectors for the second match.

  3. It’s very difficult to please everyone when selecting a team, we may like to see certain players included cause from our point but selectors sees there performance, then they discuss of their ability, performance against the required situations so Selectors job is not a easy as we see it, it’s easy to criticise as it’s a Thanks less job.

  4. With great risk often comes great reward.

Let’s hope these players give as many as opportunities (even if they fail in the beginning) play together for SL and perform well.

I’d like to see these players in the 11 in out one day setup.
Avishka, Danushka, Kusal P, Angelo M, Dasun S, Asela Gunaratne, Kusal M, Asitha F, Lahiru K, Nuwan Pradeep, Akila D

SL had a good fast bowler, Shehan Madushanga who got hat-trick against Bangladesh in Bangladesh who then got injured and never returned to the team. A very good prospect for our fast bowling strength.

I also think these players could have given more opportunities to keep a good bench strength) Milinda Siriwardena (is a good talent – no consistent opportunities was given to him, who would have scored runs down the order) so is Kithuruvan Vithanage, Dilshan Munaweera.

I heard good about Lahiru Madushanga and Mohamed Shiraz (maybe should bring into the system).

  5. Dinesh Balendran, I hear you but you should understand we are playing against a formidable opponent and moreover in a test championship. You can’t expect wholesale changes which is bit absurd as far I am concerned. I can’t see any other spinners breaking into this squad except the one’s I could think of Nishan Pieries and Jeffrey Vandersay. But Jeffrey was delivering freebies in the only one day game he last played and its a shame he couldn’t bowl against the New Zealand in the tour match as the game was a washout. As far as batsmen Roshan Silva and maybe Dhanushka Gunatilake is bit unlucky to miss out . Roshan was not even in the preliminary squad?
As for Mohammed Dilshad, Sehan and Lahiru Madushanka let’s hope they don’t have to wait too long before they are in the squad. I probably see both Madushanka’s playing in one dayers rather than in tests.
Dilshan Munaweera failed to impress during provincial tournament and Milinda Siriwardane always look very ordinary in Srilankan colours. Kithruwan Vithanage ( What a waste of talent?) still need to get his discipline sorted out before he can ever be considered.
