Win the Series or lose the captaincy, Mr. Dilshan

By Osanda Gunaratna

There comes a time when nothing goes right you need to make few changes, in cricket when a team is failing the Captain should take the blame even if he himself is performing well, but when the captain not showing the way for his team mates results disastrous failures & absolute negativity in the team, who are moving backwards instead of marching forward.

This is the scenario which takes place in the Sri Lankan cricket team lead by a pressurized TM Dilshan. Dilshan before he took on the reigns of captaincy was a very confident attacking all-round cricketer who is able to almost any role in the field whether attacking batsmen, occasional off spin bowler , wicket keeper & a fielder at almost any position, but now Dilshan has only one role to play “ captaincy”, wonder why Dilshan took it ?, when he was a multi task cricketer added a big responsibility he finds a big headache to manage, as you all could see, he seems very depressed about his role in the SLC team.

All test & ODI series against England in England and Australia at home were terrible & humiliating losses after Dilshan took over after a successful world cup captained by a very spirited & clever Kumar Sangakkara. It was a massive dissapointment & a chill down the spine to all SLC fans when Sanga decided to quit his role as a great cricket captain of Sri Lanka, almost bagging 2 cricket world cups( 2009 T20 WC & 2011 CWC).Dilshan on the other hand dosent even know what to do in pressure situations or become tactical where he  seems to crack & open up the game to the opposition.
Nevrtheless  Dilshan on the eve of the start of the ODI series against Pakistan said "This is an important series for us. Everyone is looking forward to play well and win the series. We lost the last two series after the World Cup and everyone is looking forward to it. We want to play our brand of cricket and if we do so, we can beat Pakistan," He seems to get the point that the team needs to some how achieve the elusive series win which is very important for the Sri Lankan team’s future.

However even as captaincy restricts Dilshan’s natural game (attack) he will need to score heavily in the ODIs against Pakistan  to bring Sri Lanka into winning ways or otherwise a change of captaincy will be the order of the day which actually help Dilshan to find great form he had during the last 2-3 years. This is it for Dilshan, the final curtain call, no more opportunities, wins the series now or faces the humiliation of being sacked as captain or retire gracefully & give the captaincy to Sangakkara or Mathews.

Enough failures for a team like Sri Lanka, the country doesn’t deserve it, especially the twice consecutive world cup finalists. Come on Sri Lanka it is now or never, bring back your true winning ability, bat well, bowl well & field well and bring us home some of the lost pride by winning the ODI series. Dilshan time for you to deliver or face the reality. Hope to see a victorious team at the end of the ODIs
