Silly Point Report, March 28th, 2011

Hello there, after thrilling and exciting 4 quarter finals last week, we are here for the first Semi Final Match of this season, where Sri Lanka takes on New Zealand at Colombo.

After Knock out stage battles, both the teams are eager to make an appearance in this season’s final on Saturday. All the ups and downs that they faced during the group stage and quarter final stage will not be counted in this stage since it’s totally a different scenario. Mindset of players and the atmosphere in the field will be different from other matches since this is the final hurdle to go through for a all important final. Pressure will be mounted ball by ball throughout the game and the best team who manage all these aspects with all around performances will win the match subsequently. Who knows what will happen? Who knows how they play. Let’s take a close look at some key areas with Silly Point Report.

Recent Form

Sri Lanka the utmost favorites in this season ready to clinch their 4th consecutive semi final win in world cups by defeating New Zealand tomorrow, more than a victory it’s all about pride to be a finalist in a world cup. Sri Lanka in past have made their way to 3 semi finals and 2 finals in world cups which means they have all the experience in the world to cope up with pressure of semi final. Not only that but also win over England in the QF was just amazing, they not only won the game they won it with creating new world record. Such an achievement in a world cup quarter final will definitely boost the confidence of the team in great style.

In other hand, New Zealand with a dramatic win over South Africa in the 3rd Quarter Final came in to the Semi Final while surprising all the cricket fans in the world. Even though they make in to the final they are not performing well according to their potential, they always had hiccups when it comes to big tournaments. But kiwis always believed in themselves and try to do their best at any given opportunity that is their strength so far in this World Cup. Anyways win over South Africa definitely boost their confidence level and will definitely give Sri Lanka a fighting battle to enter in to the Finals on Saturday.

Interesting Facts to look at…

New Zealand have qualified for 3 Semi Finals, 1992, 1999 and 2007 in World Cups. But never won a single Semi Final and make it to a Grand Final.

Sri Lanka met New Zealand in 2007 World cup semi final and defeated to Sri Lanka by 81 Runs. 6 of Sri Lanka players who played in that semi final will play tomorrows match as well.

Tomorrow’s Semi Final will be MURALI’S last ODI match played in Sri Lanka’s SOIL. It will be touching and emotional moment for both the spectators and Murali.

Watch Out for…

Tharanga and Dilshan – Both are in great form with 2 centuries in this season. Most successful opening pair of the tournament needs to bat well in tomorrow’s match as well.

Sanga and Samaraweera – Sanga need to carry on his great form and sure he will and also samaraweera, he needs to showcase his talent and temperament.

Malinga and Murali – Both will play today. With the Hat-trick and overall performance in the previous matches Malinga will be pumped up to bowl and hurt few toes of KIWIS. Murali in other hand playing his last game in Sri Lanka, he will be eager to make a great impact which will be remembered.

Jessy Ryder and Ross Taylor- The most experienced and talented New Zeland players in the team. Both have performed well in this season. Especially Taylor showcases his talent during the Pakistan match. So he will be key for Tomorrow’s game.

What to Worry…

Pitch will be a worry to New Zealand, since it’s a turning track. Tackling Murali, Mendis and Herath in these circumstances is really hard; New Zealand should focus on this factor. Another factor that worries New Zealand is their middle order batting, even though they get to a good start they can’t capitalize it with the middle order batting they have. So they really need to focus on this before the match.

In other hand, Can Sri Lanka handle the pressure??? It’s the big question. According to the reports reaching Silly Point Report 35000 tickets are sold out. It’s a Samon Packed stadium tomorrow with papare brands and noise. If sanga and team can concentrate and manage the pressure we can definitely taste a win tomorrow.

Possible Line up…

Sri Lanka- TM Dilshan,l WU Tharanga, KC Sangakkara*†, DPMD Jayawardene, , TT Samaraweera, LPC Silva, AD Mathews, Ajantha Mendis, SL Malinga, HMRKB Herath, M Muralitharan.

New Zealand- Brendon McCullum (wk), Martin Guptill, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor, Kane Williamson, Scott Styris, Jacob Oram, Nathan McCullum, Daniel Vettori (capt), Tim Southee, LJ Woodcock.

Silly Point Prediction…

According to the performances showed during the knockout stage, undoubtedly Sri Lanka is in a better position than New Zealand. It’s really hard to say since it’s a do or die situation, both the teams will put up their best ,but SPR smells that Sri Lanka will pull off this crunch game, but again it’s guarantee for a mouth watering finish worth watching.
