What Sri Lanka Cricket requires to move ahead

As a fan, a cricket lover, my hope is that Sri Lanka Cricket will move ahead after the slump of CWC15. But there are many obstacles specially there are no replacements for the great Sanga & Maiya. Nothing will last forever so we have to move on. But the problem is are we ready for this new format of cricket? If we want to be successful in the future we need better strategies than we have right now.

Every team nowadays have power-hitters who strikes more than 100 in top order as well as middle order. This is where SLC lags behind. Look at Aussies, they have  Warner, Finch at the top & Maxwell, Watson in the middle. Proteas have DeCock, Amla at the top & ABD, Miller in the middle. Kiwis have Baz, Guptil at the top while Corey, Elliot controls the middle. So what does SL have at the top. True we have our Dili but is Thiri good at the top? Yes he has scored centuries at the top but the strike rate is the problem. He will be a good number 3 where he can hold one end like sanga did for years. What we require is a consistent dashing opener. Kusal has been given many opportunities but he didnt grasp any. Though there are few candidates, i suggest Danushka Gunathilaka. In his previous two outings he scored a century & 80 odd runs at great strike rates. Another advantage using him is that he is an all-rounder. He is a consistent batsmen with a higher strike rate. Tha's what SLC requires at the top.

Moving on to the middle order i strongly belive there is no one better than Angelo Perera. I'm saddened by the fact that no selectors have the slightest curiosity to check how consistent he is. I was looking at his profile on cricinfo & i have not seen any other consistent batsman other than him in Sri Lanka. Many say Udara is consistent & a good opener. But for the middle order i suggest Angelo Perera.

So SLC is moving ahead with new committees & other stuff but are they even looking at the future? Our next goal should be to protect T20 crown in 2016. It's played in India so we require good spinners. But every cricket loving fans astonished by the fact what happened to little mistery man  Akila Dananjaya. Why he is not playing? If you love SLC you should put him in the team & for God's sake DO NOT send him to the IPL. Same goes to Tharindu Kaushal. Moving on to fast bowling from what i have seen, our fast bowlers are all same apart from Malinga. We need some variety. A left arm seamer would be perfect. We have all witnessed what left arm seamers did in CWC15. Gayan De Silva would be a wonderful bowler if given proper guidance. I bet no selector would have even heard of him.

It's a pity that cricket lovers like us wanting SLC to do well while selectors not picking the right talent to move ahead. We need a proper coach. From what i have seen, i think Marvan is too defensive. It was visible from his tactics throughout CWC15. An Aussie coach will be ideal may be Dav Whatmore for lower wage. Let our players have international exposure. It's not the 50 overs format we used to play. Even 400 can be chased with right tactics.

Upcoming Pakistan tour would be a perfect test for these youngsters. Drag them into the ocean & let them drown & let them somehow swim. SL team will fail but don't worry, in 2 years they will rise. Look how Baz transformed kiwis into serious competitors. I hope at least one selector would read this & mold the team. So my suggested line up as follows.

1.Danushka Gunathilake 2.Dilshan 3.Thiri 4.Angelo 5.Chandimal 6.Mathews 7.Thisara 8.Sachithra 9.Malinga 10.(New Seamer – Gayan de Silva) 11.Akila/Tharindu

This line up has 10 bowling options (apart from Chandimal all can bowl)
2 fast bowlers
4 medium pacers
4 spiners
batting depth upto 8
Dashing openers
Good middle & lower order

Stick to these guys & i'm sure this team would do wonders. Let lions crawl back from the dark hole they are at right now…
