The sorry state Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is in, is highlighted once again by the mindless decision making seen during this current ICC World Twenty20.
After scans revealed a grade one tear, which requires weeks of rest to heal, Sri Lanka still played Muttiah Muralitharan against the West Indies. He is out of the competition now with more aggravation to the injury. Murali is flying back home only to be replaced by Thushara.
Why Thushara when Dilhara Fernando bowled impressively at the IPL and looked to be in the form of his life?
It just goes to show the thoughtless and spineless decision making going on in the Caribbean by the skipper and the Chairman of Selectors, and in Sri Lanka from SLC.
Does Kumar Sangakkara and Ashantha De Mel in the Caribbean not recall Fernando playing for Mumbai in the final of this year’s IPL? What about the clowns at SLC? None of them remembered that Fernando finished the IPL with seven wickets from just five games at an impressive average of 19.71?
Thushara did well for himself too but statistics don’t always give you the full picture which is why selectors must watch every game. If you followed the IPL then you know that Fernando was far better for Mumbai than Thushara was for Chennai. Don’t expect our selectors to know any of this, they have work and family commitments before national selection.
SLC cannot employee full time selectors and pay them, but Ashantha De Mel enjoys yet another vacation at the expense of a bankrupt SLC? His presence on overseas tours has made no difference. De Mel’s duties can be performed over the phone. He need not be there.
