The way forward for Sri Lanka

The World Cup is over and its time to rebuild for the future. A lot has been said about the lions world cup performance, and there is defineatly many things to look into. But there are a few areas which has to be ironed out.

1. Pool of players for the next 2 years
The selectors have to identify a pool of 20 players which are to be Sri Lanka Cricket for the next years. The composition of the team should be done by people with more knowledge than me, but identifying these players should be clear. And furthermore; when we make this desicion we stick with these players – regardless of results. Within the group of 20 we can pick according to form and injurires, but the same players should be in contention. After 2 years we can reassess- hopefully we have identified the teams backbone (Thiri, Chandi, Mathews, Tharindu Kausal and Chaamera, Lakmal maybe?), if we need to bring some new players, this is the time, and then we can build towards UK 2019.

2. Fielding and fitness
SLs fielding was terrrible. There is no excuses for consitently underperforming in this department. Almost all players who scored heavily against us in the WC were dropped of catches of various difficulty grade: Williamson, Maxwell, Root and even De Kock offered chances. These are all top class players who can hurt your teams winning chances severely. Compare that to the QF against South Africa; Kusal was caught off a rebound by De Kock and Faf Du Plessis took a sharp catch in the slips to dismiss Dilshan. I can't imagine SL taking any of those catches. The result; SL was 2 wickets down within 5 overs off powerplay.

Much more emphasis has to be put into fielding. This about priorities and hiring a fielding coach 3 months before a WC is not enough. Catches wins matches!  This has a lot to do with our fitness levels as well. Watching some of our players, like Malinga, is simply not fit enough.

I hope these things are looked into for SLs future..
