One always hears of Sanath Jayasuriya’s and Romesh Kaluwitharana’s exploits at the 1996 World Cup. But any footage that exists today is of either the semi-finals or the finals of that World Cup, matches in which the two didn’t do as well.
Unless one is privileged enough to live in the sub-continent, the 1996 group stage matches are some what of a thing of the past.
Well let’s change that today.
With the kind courtesy of ESPN-Star Sports we present to you a few highlights from a remarkable run chase that would forever change the manner teams approached one day cricket.
Sri Lanka were chasing 271 after a spectacular century from Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin and Azhar’s blitz at the end left the Sri Lankan bowlers looking demoralised and the fielders looking dismayed. Any other team would have succumbed.
Chasing 271 against India in India, that too during a World Cup fixture was no mean feat.
Sri Lanka didn’t just look to chase 271, they also aimed at destroying a few reputations in the process.
Don’t miss this one cricket fans!
The second segment of the show is possible thanks to Ten Sports who recently aired a brilliant interview with the Prince of Sri Lankan Cricket, Aravinda De Silva.
