1. The ideal cricket captain is an ambassador for Sri Lanka duty bound to protect Sri Lanka’s reputation and uplift Sri Lanka’s image on and off the field

2. The ideal cricket captain recognizes that he and his team carry the nation’s expectations every time they take the field

3. The ideal captain recognizes that he and his team will play to the best of their ability every time they take the field regardless of personal feelings or circumstances

4. The ideal cricket captain will not use his privileged position and access to media to disrepute Sri Lanka on purpose or by implication regardless of his personal feelings or circumstances which may be fair or unfair in his own point of view

5. The ideal cricket captain is someone who will not make public statements that can directly or potentially harm Sri Lanka’s reputation while on tour or at home whether such statements are truthful or fair in his own personal circumstances

6. The ideal cricket captain will make known his grievances, suggestions, feelings or reservations through the established internal communication system in a private manner that will not disrepute or give rise to negative publicity on Sri Lanka

7. The ideal cricket captain will always uplift national pride and instil national pride amongst his team regardless of personal feelings or circumstances prevailing at the time

8. The ideal cricket captain has the ability to get the best out of the team made available to him whether or not the team has players of his choice or regardless how a player is selected to the team

9. The ideal cricket captain has good people skills

10. The ideal cricket captain takes decisions and stands by those decisions

11. The ideal cricket captain is a mentor, motivator and leads by example on and off the field

20. The ideal captain must always believe that his ability is second to no other opposition player and instil a similar belief in his team

21. The ideal captain will not tolerate a consistently irresponsible player who is careless in batting , bowling or fielding regardless of his specialist area ( example : a bowler is expected to bat sensibly and responsibly always and vice versa)

22. The ideal captain will set objectives for his team, monitor progress, provide feed back to players and shows where improvements are necessary

23. The ideal captain will promote a culture individual responsibility within the team on the principle ” do not leave it to your colleagues to finish the game “

24. The ideal captain will be competitive, a fighter and instill similar qualities amongst his team

25. The ideal captain will treat his team equally and fairly regardless of seniority, personal relations or any other element

26. The ideal captain will promote continues improvement in all disciplines batting, bowling and fielding regardless of personal relations and reputations of his team members

27. The ideal captain will always work towards holding the team and players together

28. The ideal cricket captain will follow and promote the belief that representing the national team is ultimate and a player’s greatness is measured by the contributrion and sacrifices he makes for the country
