This blog post is based on Mahela Jayawardene's reply to a fan's comment on participating all the 9 provinces to establish a cricketing structure (http://www.cricketage.in/2017/08/22/over-quantity-of-provincial-teams-mahela-trolled-his-fan/). It is clear that Sri Lanka's domestic structure mostly depends on 3 provinces (Western,Southern and Central) and few cricket clubs based on Western Province (Specially Colombo District). With today's Sri Lanka's performances cause severe criticism on the quality of Existing domestic cricketing structure. As a cricket lover who resides bit far away from Colombo, what I feel is,
i). Sri Lanka's existing cricketing structure is to be matched with the current international standards to produce quality local players.
ii). Sri Lanka needs to find a widely spread, logical methodology to establish a reasonable talent base island wide.
With Mahela Jayawardene's view on Provincial structure, I would like to suggest the below mentioned Provincial structure to find talented cricketers. I am with Mahela's comment on participating all the 9 provinces to play a tournament because at the moment, around 5 provinces don't have enough cricketing infrastructure or background to form separate teams apart from Western,Southern and Central provinces and North Western Province to a certain extent. Therefore what I would like to suggest is merging few districts into few separate teams based on one or two centers with acceptable level of facilities to practice and play matches as follows.
i). Western Provincial Team (Include all 3 districts with 1 center per each district with one or two acceptable level stadiums).
ii). Southern Provincial Team (Include all 3 districts with 1 center per each district with one or two acceptable level stadiums).
iii). North Western Provincial Team(Include all 2 districts with 1 center per each district. Kurenegala Welagedera Stadium can be considered as 1 center and develop an other center/Stadium in Puttalam District).
iv). Central Provincial Team (Kegalle,Kandy,Nuwara Eliya Districts. Kandy, Pallekele international stadium,Asgiriya Stadium and develop an existing stadium in Nuwara Eliya district-Radella Stadium).
v). Uva Provincial Team (Badulla,Monaragala and Ratnapura Districts. Badulla Vincent Dias Stadium can be developed as a center and a New Sporting Complex is being built in Ratnapura New town-Besides Seevali Central Collage.)
vi). North Central Provincial Team (Anuradhapura,Polonnaruwa and Matale Districts-Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium and Develop an existing stadium in Anuradhapura District as centers.).
vii). North and Eastern Provincial Team (1 center as Alfred Duraiappah Stadium in Jaffana and develop an existing stadium as an other center in Batticloe District to access Trincomalee and Ampara Districts).
After the civil war, we all see that some kind of a cricketing talent is trying to be emerged from North and Eastern Provinces. This approach might help these new comers to breed and shine in future. As per the sources, SLC is going to think about a provincial structure but still support club cricket. As a cricket lover, I would like to say that let club cricket run but these clubs and SLC have a responsibility to invest on these emerging players island wide and all the high profile cricketing consultants should travel around the country to find fresh talents to align with the main cricketing stream rather than restricting themselves around few specific areas or regions.
Looking forward to see comments and suggestions from the fans, players and all the other parties and authorities.
