From 1995/96, I am following Sri lanka's cricket. That time internet is not so much available like now. After some years, I could get all cricket info including domestic leagues of Sri Lanka. From that time, I am noticing that domestic level is so poor. How can I say that? Let's define my point.
There were many domestic cricket leagues. Many players were the top scorer or top wicket taker in those series. But Sri Lankan selectors maximum time overlooked the current top form player for a recent series. Selectors most of the time opted some very talented players. Some of them are Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, Jehan Mubarak, Chamara Kapugedera, Thilina Kandamby, Sekugge Prasanna, Kushal Perera, Lahiru thirimanne etc. (Angelo Mathews,Dinesh Chandimal score lots of runs before the came into the team). I think you all know more names. I was angry about the team selection.
After coming into the team, other countries young players performs. But for Sri Lanka? Always we hear the same dialog. He is very talented. For thirimanne, he after debut in 2010, almost after 3/4 years he started to contribute. That means, domestic level experience couldn't help him to perform in international level. This was also happened for Angelo Mathews, Mahela Jayawardene.
Now come to about in-form player of domestic level. Jehan Mubarak in old age, Naved newaj, Thilina Kandamby etc. None could perform in international level. But Jehan Mubarak was one of the leading run scorers in recent times in domestic cricket, but failed in international level even in home condition.
I think if I want to collect statistics, I can collect many. If anyone disagree with me, s/he also can show lots of statistics. But, what I wanted to say, I think, it is clear to all.
Sri Lankan's young stars can not perform well as they perform in domestic level before coming into the team.
