Sri Lankan playing XI for group stage games (Australia)

Hello to all my friends. As promised  I write to you the content  about the best possible playing XI for Sri Lanka vs. Australia. Last week I discussed about New Zealand, I got some helpful feed back, valuable opinions and sharp visions of other fellow Sri Lankan supporters. I hope to incorporate some the thoughts and ideas posted and then present the best Sri Lankan XI I think has what it takes to beat Australia in the upcoming ICC Cricket world Cup 2015.

Australia Vs. Sri Lanka March 8, 2015 at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney, New South Wales

Australia have won this World Cup already on Paper, Radio and the Internet, all what is left  to do actually is to win it in real game situation. In fact Michael Clark was seen in a picture holding the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, along side Allan Border with 1987 Cricket World Cup, Steve Waugh 1999 Cricket World Cup and Ricky Ponting with 2003 and 2007 World Cups respectively. I thought It was unethical and really outrageous, as the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup is yet to get underway and an open tournament. But for the Australian Public, all the cricketing pundits and the experts this seems almost but certain. Australia for me is a definite favorite, but I tip New Zealand to fare better than them. In saying that, no other team had better preparation like Australia heading up to the tournament. They have been a sound, dangerous and inform team.

Australia have genuine match winners, they have almost all the components to win the tournament, almost. I however believe they lack a quality spinner. Their quick bowlers are super quick and dangerous, their batters are free scorers but they have Xavier Doherty as the spinner. He is way below par spinner. Australians believe they can win the world cup without spin, I disagree. Spinners play a vital role no matter what. They did a huge mistake by not picking Nathan Lyon to the world cup squad.Hope this decision comes back and bite them. Good news for Sri Lanka is that we play them is Sydney. The only slow wicket in Australia. Rangana and Sachitra will love this ground. Sachitra should have a fair insight to this ground playing for Sydney Sixers in the big bash league.  Sri Lanka has lost only twice in Sydney in the past 7 years and 1 no result and rest have been Victories. Like of Sangakkara and  Mahela have scored good runs on this surface. Sri Lanka has a good ground support in Sydney, second to Melbourne. It's like Sri Lankan settlement plan destination. The number of Sri Lankans living in Sydney are as good as Melbourne. So Ground Support is all but covered, one can say we can expect more support flying in from, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra and Brisbane for this game. if the Ground holds 50,000 people, we can guarantee 20,000 Sri Lankans for sure. A good Papare round and some Baila will cheer the Sri Lankan team no doubt. What is sad tho is that Australia starting XI has 6 out 11 players who represent New South Wales. Thus making this ground their home surface. They will know what to expect and what not to expect. Saying that, only Michael Clarke and Steve Smith Plays spin better in the Australian Team compared to others. I still belief Sri Lanka has a slight advantage on this surface than Australia.

Facing these boys, Sri Lanka have a lot of bases to cover. Their key 5 players to watch out are David Warner, explosive and dangerous just like Brendon McCullum. If he gets going, it's curtains closed. I think Kulasekera and Angie have had the better of Warner most of the time. Phil Hughes was always the threat to the Sri Lankan line up in the recent past, R.I.P and 63 Not Out for ever. Warner still posses a huge threat to Sri Lanka. Second Player is Shane Watson, THE COMPLETE ALL ROUNEDR, he is lethal but playing Spin has always been his week link. Third Player is Steve Smith, this guy is a run scoring machine, his form last year and this year is beyond imagination, he plays everything well. I think Malinga Yorkers are the injections he needs. Fourth is Captain Michael Clarke, sound cricketer, exquisite timer of the ball, smart captain and plays spin exceptionally well. He tho struggles vs Kula, so Kula get ready when he walks out. Last is Mitchell Johnson, he is rip snorter, fast and furious. Sangakkara and Mahela should however tackle him and the rest of the Australia fast bowling brigade well, after all we faced the New Zealand attack a lot, didn't we? Should be good practice.

Millions dollar question, so what is the best combination? it goes like

T.M Dilshan
Mahela Jayawardena
Kumar Sangakkara
Dinesh Chandimal
Lahiru Thirimanna
Angelo Matthews
Thissara Perera
Nuwan Kulasekera
Rangana Herath
Sachitra Senanaake
Lasith Malinga

We cant have the slow but consistent start which we get from Dilly and Thiri, we need explosion at the top, since Kusal is a no show at this World Cup and Mahela is the only other option he will have to open. Chandimal makes sense as the middle order batter to replace Mahela and he loves playing the Aussies.  Thirimanna should go before Angelo, depending on the situation of the match. Rest of the places are unchanged from the New Zealand squad. Till we meet again with how to tackle England, im Sithum Samaraweera signing off

Jaya Sri and Ayubowan.
