Sri lanka Cricket and its dilemma

A world T20 is over the horizon and Sri Lanka cricket has started their mission to defend their title. But if you ask any conscious cricket fan about Sri Lanka's chances the answer would have been zero to none. By the time of this article's writing the squad might have reduced to 14 men given Malinga has retired. Yet Sri Lanka is the only team to have a 40 year old in the playing 11. The administrator seems to be giving the opportunities to by gone heroes based on their past glories. Even though the team lost the Indian series at least the selectors got the bowling department right to an extent. But both in Asia cup and world cup the squad looks horribly out dated and out of form. Lets consider each an every member of the sri Lankan squad and try to understand on what merit that they are given the opportunity and who could have them replaced.

Tillakaratne Dilshan: Probably the most outdated and out of form batsman in the side. Since 2014 he has not done enough to be given the opportunity to be in the squad. The reason behind his selection is that there seems to be no proven opener. Its time Sri Lanka move past him and give a younger batsman the opportunity. If we are loosing it's better do so with a young team. Bhanuka Rajapakse, Kusal Mendis or Danushka Gunathilaka  should have been given the opportunity. Because in the coming days Dilshan will have to be replaced.

Nuwan Kulasekara: If the tournament was played in England may be he should have played. But in India he has never been successful. At his pace without swing the batsman of the likes of kane williamson, Seteven smith and all Indian flat track bullies will feast on him. Either sri lanka should have gone to express pace like Dilhara Fernando (I know he is 36 but he is still the 3rd fastest after chameera and malinga) Dhammika Prasad (If he is fit)  Nuwam pradeep or a spinner like Vandersy or Akila Dhanjaya.

Dinesh Chandimal & Lahiru Thiramanne: You cannot have both of them playing in one line up. The only reason to do so is that the uncertainty of the middle order.  If i was given the opportunity I would drop both of them. And promote Sriwardane to No 4 Position. Shanaka at No 5 and Mathews at No 6.

Sachithra Senanayake:  Probably his days are done as a spinner after the action remodeling. Should have picked Akila Dhanjaya or Sadaken instead of him.

Suranga Lakmal: He is a line and length bowler. Not a T20 bowler and not a wicket taking option.

Shehan Jayasuriya: Doesnt seems to be t20 material.

Chamara Kapugedara : Should be replaced with Chamara Kapugedara batting at No 3 (SL cricket destroyed his carrier by moving him all over the line up)
The rest of the team looks ok if Malinga is fit. If he is not he have to be replaced with a pace bowler how in genie fast bowler.

My Team would be: Kusal Mendis,  Danushka Gunathilaka, Chamara Kapugedara, Milinda Siriwardane, Dasun Shanaka, Angelo Mathews, Tisara Perera, Rangana Herath, Jeffery Vandersy, Lasith Malinga, Dushmantha Chameera

Remaining Squad :  Lahiru Milantha/Niroshan Dickwella (reserve WK), Dhanjaya de Silva (Top Order batsman) ,Akila Dhananjaya (Spinner) or Seekkuge Prasanna (Leg Spinner), Dhammika Prasad (if fit) of else Shaminda Eranga

If malinga is not fit replace him completely with Dilhara Fernando.

This way we give ample opportunity for the players and give them more responsibility. Even if the team badly looses still players will gain enough experience and in two years time will come good.
