Selfish Senior Cricketers

I am a very good fan of Sri Lanka cricket from 1996 World Cup. That time, Sri Lanka was not good team to win the world cup. They were underdog. The main thing I loved "the spirit" of team. They played more than their abilities. As a supporter, we didn't know who were the responsible for that. Perhaps, Coach Dave Whatmore, Captain Arjuna Ranatunga all were in combination of plan. They played as a TEAM. So, everyone wanted to do what good for the team was.

But after some years, Sri lankan players play for statistics, play for pride, play for name, play individually. In 1996, we saw senior batsmen moved down the order to accomodate young batsmen. So, that Sanath Jayasuriya, Romesh Kaluwitharana could play freely without pressure. In this Sri lanka team, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardena also got the same facilites from senior players. Senior players moved down the order to reduce pressure on Sanga, Mahela.

Now, Sanga and Mahela are senior players. Last 7/8 years they are playing great. But when some junior players are coming, seniors are not giving them position to play at ease. I want to say about Dinesh Chandimal. He played very good when he started playing. He is comfortable at number 3/4 and played some very good innings in that position. Sanga, Mahela know that very well and some years ago they told "dinesh chanidal is a great prospect. We want to play him between us." So, Sanga at number 3, Chandi at 4, Mahela at 5. We see some innings in that format.

These types of things are happened in all countries to help the young players. Jack Kallis moved down to number 4 to give position to Hashim Amla at number 3. Now Hashim Amla is senior, he moved down to number 4 to give position to Faf du Plessis. We can see about Kane Williamson of New Zealand, Ambati Rayudo of India. I think there are lots of examples.

Also, I want to say about rotaion of batsmen to give enough match practice. It's is also a great problem of Sri Lankan planning after 1996 world cup. Some senior batsmen always came to bat early, lower order batsmen can't get enough time to get back in form.

I think these are known issues. The only thing is there any plan to fix those.
