Review of the 3rd Test Match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan

When i saw the team chosen for the third test match I was quite shocked not to see a second spinner playing in the line up. We all know that the SSC track does take alot of spin, especially on a fourth and fifth day. But Sri Lanka however wanted to give its premier fast bowler Chaminda Vass one last go in test cricket. Dropping Mendis was quite the way to go, at least according to the team management.

I for one do not agree as to how Chaminda Vass was handled during this whole test series. This Gentleman and a great cricketer should have been given a decent run against these Pakistani batsman. After all he has been a great servant of SL cricket for well over 15 years and he deserves a fair go. But this is not a topic I would like to touch on right now. Getting back to the team selection.

I cannot still fathom how a team of expert selectors could have risked an in-form batsman of the calibre of T.M Dilshan, who has been in top notch form, to do the wicket keeping duties. Knowing very well we would have been better served if he just played as a pure batsman. This is not only mind boggling, but ruined his chances of playing a bigger part in the second innings chase. Sangakkara had to take up the wicket keeping duties half way through the first innings after Dilshan injured his finger while keeping wickets. The selectors in my book need to be far more forthright and more mature in their selection. This silly mistake not only ruined our chances of winning this test match, but also made us lose our in-form batsman for the forthcoming one day series.

As it now stands Pakistan have come back quite strongly to post a score of 490 for SL to win. This looks quite an impossible task as we have struggled to post scores of over 300+ in five test innings prior to this.

The only hope Sri Lanka has lays is with our captain Sanga to save the blushes by playing a blinder. Like he did against the Aussies in Australia. Hopefully by the end of today we would be able to see either a win or a good test match .. call me a optimist but i think our chances of winning this test match are quite healthy if Samaraweera and Sanga can hold on and play positive cricket.

Good Luck
