The selectors have named the final squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 minus one of Sri Lanka’s brightest new prospects – Suraj Randiv. They have chosen, instead, to go with Ajantha Mendis and Rangana Herath to partner the great man, Muttiah Muralitharan.
The move is a strange one when you consider how in all of Sri Lanka’s recent tours, Randiv has been their spinner of choice. Neither Herath nor Mendis got a chance in Australia recently.
But what may have altered the thinking of the selectors could be the hammering Randiv recevied in Test cricket recently – he conceded more than 200 runs in an innings twice in 2010.
It’s a really tough call on the youngster who has performed well, at times in tough conditions for spinners. How the selectors can justify selecting Mendis and Herath over Randiv is pretty hard to grasp.
