As, the 2015 world cup is fast approaching, all playing nation have focused on to settle their team combinations. In the comparison, Sri Lanka, just arrived England For a full tour of two test, five one day internationals and one off T-Twenty, is looking far more settled and balanced team, after winning the Asia cup and t-20 world cup. Yet, they need to sort out their backups, in case of injuries or bad form of any specific player.
In the regards, Selection Committee just missed a golden chance to try out a new player, outside their preferred pull of players for the mega event. As the team departed for the UK tour, their star all rounder Thisara Perera failed to get a visa approved in time. As a result, SLC was forced to replace Thisara with the fast bowler Shaminda Eranga.
But, it could be a wiser choice, if they opted for the Kosala Kulasekera, instead of Eranga. Though, Eranga is a key member of Sri Lanka’s Test attack, but He was originally not in the T20 squad for England and moreover hasn’t played a one-day international since last year.
On the other hand, Kosala has been in prime form, especially in the shorter formats of the game, since last few months now. Just like Thisara, Kosala, a product of Vidyartha College, Kandy, is also an all-rounder, batting right-handed and bowling right-arm fast medium. Same as Thisara, He too is a powerful hitter down the order, can hit sixes on demand. He was the man of the series in Sri Lanka’s last super 4’s twenty-20 tournament.
Just last week, he scored two quick fire fifties in the Bharti Airtel sponsored MCA Tier ‘A’ Super T20 tournament, held at the MCA grounds. In a semi-final match against MAS Active, he blast 54 not out in just 24 balls, with five massive sixes. But his best performance came in a earlier match against National Trust Bank, where he scored 58 not out in just 17 balls, with seven sixes!
So, it could be a good decision, had selectors opted for Kosala for the two one dayers against Ireland, in the absence of Thisara. As, chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya had mentioned recently, that they seek more all rounders, Kosala could give them the desire luxury in selection.
But, all has not lost yet. Before the 2015 world cup, Sri Lanka has twenty odd one day internationals to fine their tune. So, in the future at least, they can try Kosala Kulasekera, and see what he can bring on board!
