Jayasuriya axes Tharanga with ‘political influence’ for WT20

The website CricketNext says that Sanath Jayasuriya was included in the squad of 15 players for the ICC WT20 2010 at the expense of Upul Tharanga.

It goes on to say that Sports Minister, Gamini Lokuge, was behind the inclusion despite the selectors choosing a different squad.

Captain Kumar Sangakakra is said to have "has expressed his annoyance" at the changes made.

Chinthaka Jayasinghe too has been included in place of Jeewan Mendis.

The sources say that former opening batsman Upul Tharanga’s name was scratched off the list and Jayasuriya, who is in line to become a politician for the governing party to which Lokuge is a member, was included instead.

Jayasuriya is a candidate in the forthcoming general elections for the ruling UNPA for the district of Matara. The elections are to be held on April 8.

A second change was that of Chinthaka Jayasinghe for the talented Jeewan Mendis with, neither of whom are playing in the Indian Premier League.
