I believe the children are our future….
Teach them well……….
And let them lead….
You just caught me singing Whitney Houston tunes in the shower.
How can I ever cover my shame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Though amongst my mangling on these lyrics there is a message for Sri Lanka cricket…
Quite simply the children are your future… Let them lead the way!
The legends such as of Murali have retired tests as has the great left arm mauling batsman Jayasuriya. So with this in the mind they have been replaced in the side by two excellent young players in the all rounder Angelo Matthews and the off spinner Suraj Randiv. Lets have a more detailed look at the two.
In young Randiv, the great cricket loving people of Sri Lanka have a very fine young spinner. His debut was a baptism of fire against the maulers of spin the Indians.Though with this in mind he performed with due aplomb which i’m sure would have got the thumbs up from the icon ‘Murali’.
In the third test in Colmbo’s Sara ground he got 9 for the match and in the Indian run chase in the last innings. He was a buzz saw through the excellent Indian top order reducing them to 64/4 claiming all four wickets. Only a typical VVS Laxman century under pressure won the match for the Indians. Definitely one who I think will do ‘Murali’ memory a good imitation!
Then another I love is the excellent all round prospect in Angelo Matthews. The constant questions over the Sri Lankan leadership leads me to the door of this fine young player. He reminds me of one of my heroes, Ranatunga, just his demeanour smacks of natural leadership. Admittedly, he hasn’t excelled at Test level as yet, but I have faith in his immense talent. Also, I see him as one who will lift when given leadership roles so even now id make him vice captain in the Test team.
Though my love for the next generation of great cricketers of this paradise island doesn’t end here. There are two outside the team who I love and would insert in the team. Dinesh Chandima; I just bask in this boys immense ability….
Again, this keeper batsman is a natural leader and down the track can see him and Matthews leading Sri Lanka. I must admit I love Prassana but in Chandimal it’s an upgrade at the position and in my opinion he is just a batting prodigy, such is his ability. I saw him in the ‘,08 under 19 World Cup and my word did he catch my eye with his talent! Again for me without hesitation when the test series starts against the Windies in a few weeks he’d be at number 7 in my team.
Then my other true love in Sri Lankan cricket and he’s been testing my love for him by how frustrating he has been is Chamara Kapugedera. I saw him as a 19 year old bat in Australia and the first thing I thought was the Sri Lankan version of Greg Chappell. Such was his elegance and array of shots and the time he had while batting. I speak to my Sri Lankan friends when I indulge in some fine Sri Lankan seafood and we all just shake our heads over him. We have come to the consensus that he was not mentally ready for Test cricket when he broke into the side.
Though, my word, such is his talent id have every head doctor from here to kingdom come dealing with his issues. The benefits for the Sri Lankan batting with his immense abilities being harnessed would be like digging a hole in your back yard and finding an oil well!
So there you go and please don’t hate on me for my damned awful singing!
