Reports are in and indications are that Dinesh Chandimal wont be selected for the playing XI at least in the group stage T20s against Zimbabwe and South Africa which will be played at the Mahinda Rajapakse Stadium, Hambantota. Chandimal faced a severe form slump during the ODIs vs India and to a more extent throughout the SLPL.The only time he played a knock with full flow was the 75 runs he scored against Ruhuna Royals and that came only during the final stages of the SLPL.
It is clear that the Sri Lankan Cricket selection committee doesn’t want to take any chance to weaken the playing XI by any means and so they feel Chandimal doesn’t make it XI and given how he performed recently reflects on it. The SLC selectors have kept more faith on SLPL find " Dilshan Munaweera" to take the spot of Chandimal, however he will be playing as an opener with Mahela slated to drop 1 down.
After promising so much as Sri Lanka’s next big thing to happen who can emulate Dilshan, Sangakkara and even Mahela, even Dilshan praised him enormously as Dilshan slated that Chandimal one day will cross 10000 runs in both tests and ODIs its back to the drawing board for the youngster.
However one should not let hugely talented players like these to go awry as how Kapugedera, Kandamby, Mubarak, Chamara Silva went to waste and try the best way possible to bring back the youngster to top gear with all the training, match practice, coaching etc. It is a big responsibility on SLC to groom Chandimal to make a name on his own, well the rest is up to him and the good luck he deserves.
