Basnahira North Wins – Sri Lanka Inter Provincial Cricket 2009

After being bowled out for 223, Wayamba picked up 8 wickets for 132 runs.

On the surface that would probably put them ahead in this game.

The only glitch is the other two batsmen scored 255 runs between them. No prizes for guessing who it was either.

Angelo Matthews has clearly made his case to be included in the Sri Lankan test team. His side were 96-5 when he and Pushpakumara launched the counter attack.

Matthews played a classic innings supporting his more aggressive partner. Their partnership of nearly 200 runs put B North in complete control of the game.

The Wayamba bowlers did well except for dislodging Matthews and Pushpakumara, which was the important bit.

Mubarak clearly felt it was the spinner who were going to do the job for him because Welegedara and Perera hardly got a look in on day 2.

Which may have been a mistake after what happened on day 1.

Any lead of over 100 was going always going to be massive advantage for North and they ended up with 166 in the tin.

Wayamba needed a good start in the 2nd innings and they got it. Vandort and Udawatte put on 66 for the first wicket.

But after the first wicket went Wayamba continued their negative momentum by losing wickets at all the wrong times.

North kept chipping away and at 177-6 they were all but assured victory.

Any chance of a lower order miracle for Wayamba were snuffed out withing the space of 4 runs.

Pushpakumara ended up with 4 wickets to follow up his superb century. A clear cut favorite for MoM.

North needed 15.

Game over in 3 days.

They were clear favorites coming in to the final but no one really expected such a one sided contest. In the end the difference between the two teams were two batsmen who showed there was nothing wrong with the Premadasa pitch if you were ready to get dirty and stain your whites a little.

They are deserving winners.
